The Heart of a Hero by Susan May Warren is the second book in her Global Search and Rescue series. Ex-Navy SEAL, Jake Silver, acts instinctively and sorts out the consequences later. Working for Jones Inc. Jake helped rescue Dr. Aria Sinclair on Denali. Now he he’s in Florida rescuing her from a Category 4 hurricane. With their lives hanging in the balance will they be able to overcome their fears and self-doubts? This book references book one quite a bit. There are some things you have no clue what they are talking about if you haven’t read the preceding book. But if you can overlook that then you’ll enjoy this story. Jake and Aria’s self-doubts seemed to rule theirs until they finally figured out that God is in control! The adventure was non-stop. Jake truly was a hero. I thought the side story should have been developed more. Hopefully it will continue in the next book! It was a great read.
I received this book from the publisher for my honest review.

I could not wait to get my hands on this book! I first met Jake and Aria in The Way of the Brave and was dying to get to spend more time with them. Jake is all types of swoon-worthy hero, and he doesn’t even know it. In this book, The Heart of a Hero I got to meet Jake’s family and learn a lot more about what made him the man he is. His life has been far from easy and he’s often harder on himself than he should be. He loves with all he’s got, is quick to jump to action, and is loyal to the core. The perfect candidate for an elite rescue team.
This book had me laughing, crying and biting my nails. Warren had me on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t get enough and didn’t want to stop reading for anything. I could picture myself in the keys right alongside Jake and Aria fighting against hurricane winds. Warren has a way with words and quite often takes my breath away. I recommend this book to anyone who loves Romantic Suspense. I can’t wait to see what Warren does next, and hope that she won’t make me wait too long! I received a copy of this book from Revell Publishing and was in no way forced to post a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Wow! This book should come with a label that reads Warning: High intensity adventure ahead. May cause loss of sleep due to inability to stop reading.
Aria heads to Florida to relax at a medical conference after the traumas she endured while climbing Denali but ends up stranded in Key West in the path of a Category 5 hurricane. Jake heads to Florida to find her as he is worried and cannot forget the connection he had with Aria on the mountain.
The suspense and adventure is seriously non-stop and in the midst of it all is some serious character development. I loved how Jake and Aria lifted each other up and helped each other to heal, and their romance is so very sweet. I enjoyed meeting some great new side characters and hope we see more of them in the next book.
While reading The Way of the Brave is not absolutely necessary before reading this book, I would recommend it as it will make the characters and their relationships with each other easier to understand and more enjoyable. I anxiously await the final book in the series!
Many thanks to Revell Publishing for a complimentary copy of this book. My opinions are my own.
Full of action and heart-stopping adventure!

The first book in this series was in Alaska and WOW, there was so much action I thought, “My goodness what else could go on with these characters?” Well, this is a Susan May Warren’s book and I have to remember, what I’ve said MANY times . . .
“This author keeps us on the seat of our chairs gripping the armrest trying to breathe. In this story, there is action, romance, drama, running for their lives, kidnapping attempts, shootings, pain, Oh, the pains! I’m so glad I’m not one of her characters because of all the things she puts them through. WOW! The action is non-stop and jaw-dropping.”
SO, I shouldn’t have been surprised that in continuing the series, this author would keep that action-packed, high-drama, intensity going.
In this story, we find out more regarding Jake and Aria and their struggles. Their lives have so much past pain and feelings of failure. Will they be able to rise above the raging waters of self-doubt before it takes them down? Can they find acceptance in each other?
We also get a teaser of what’s to come in the next book. We meet Ham’s little girl and read about some of the struggles he’s dealing with. I personally enjoyed reading connections to the Montana Marshalls series Susan May Warren wrote. It’s always fun to reconnect with past characters from her other books.
I think I will continue to apply this disclaimer to all my reviews from now on:
I'm at a loss to have words eloquent enough to convey the depth of emotions and feelings I get each time I pick up one of Susan May Warrens' books. In each of her books, I find wonderful life lessons of the love of God, woven in such a way that it is real and not fake or pushed.
Whatever Ms. Warren writes I'll read because I know I'll be captivated and blessed in a way that is life-changing.
I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Beauty in the Binding - 5 years ago
The Heart of a Hero by Susan May Warren captured my interest immediately with the tension between Aria and Jake. As I read, I didn’t want to put the book down. The action, bravery, and romantic suspense combined to form a gripping storyline. Being from Florida and having lived through multiple hurricanes, I deeply identified with this book. I could visualize the author’s descriptions of the water, the sound, and the damage caused by the powerful storm.
I also enjoyed the characters in The Heart of a Hero. I admired how Aria struggled through her issues and came into her own as she embraced her talents, worth, and identity. Despite the external drama of a raging hurricane, plenty of introspective moments made for good character development. Jake had his own issues to work through and overcome, but Aria was the one I felt invested in as a reader. I absolutely loved Mimi and her wisdom.
The Heart of a Hero by Susan May Warren is a keeper for my bookshelf and I plan to binge-read the entire series in the future when all the books are published. The Heart of a Hero stands as the second installment in the Global Search and Rescue series. Although some background on Jake and Aria’s relationship is given, I do recommend reading the novels in order as their previous interactions critically affect their relationship in this novel.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a copy of this book by the author or publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.

"Panic comes when we stop believing that God is good. Or, that God is sovereign. But he is both, and that is the key to peace, even in the midst of the grief, or fear. Whatever storm life brings."
It seems that every time Dr. Aria Sinclair goes on vacation, that she ushers in a storm. . . . and not just any storm, a Category Five hurricane storm . . . on an island . . . in the middle of the ocean. Equally as jarring is the fact that Jake Silver keeps showing up in the middle of it all, just when she needs him the most. And Aria despises being needy. So, why does she insist on running straight into his arms with reckless abandon? Why?!
Jake kind of likes it when Aria needs him. . . . okay more than likes it, if the truth were known. Even if her call for help was misunderstood, trying to survive a brutal Key West storm with sick and injured patients, while hunkering down in a deserted island hospital, calls for back-up. But what about when the winds stop blowing and the rains stop falling . . what then, Aria Sinclair and Jake Silver? What then?
As Aria and Jake continue their on-again, off-again attraction, a curious thing happens, God settles their hearts. Meanwhile, the battle to get off the island is about to take a turn for the worse.
The Susan May Warren that I have loved for years shows back up in this book. The pace is a bit more settled, the characters have time to properly introduce themselves, and the spiritual depth is absolutely point on, which pleases me . . . . . because this series is far from over.
I received a copy of this book from Baker Publishing through Interviews and Reviews. The opinions stated above are entirely my own.

"I know grace is difficult to accept. It's in our nature to want to bargain for our redemption, as if we have a stake in it. But it's an all-or-nothing proposal. You can do nothing but receive it. All or nothing. I am forgiven. I am clean. I am loved."
Susan May Warren yet again weaves a heart-pounding tale laced with romance and brimming with spiritual truths but this time set on an island off Florida in the midst of a hurricane. This is book 2 in the series and I suggest reading the series in order to catch and appreciate all the nuisances in the plot and character development. Eagle-eyes will see some neat comments about characters from her previous two series (Montana Marshalls and Montana Rescue), which is super-fun for fans of the author.
The adrenaline-filled action and suspense come from surviving a hurricane and the aftermath on an island, which is a bit different from scaling an icy mountain in Alaska (which happened in The Way of the Brave). Jake proves himself a true hero who "does the hard thing despite the cost" while scrounging for supplies, helping Aria stabilize the wounded, fighting off bad guys, and rescuing multiple people stranded during the storm. Jake is impulsive, smart, wickedly resourceful, a man of action but unexpectedly sensitive and tender. Yet he has a troubled past and needs to accept forgiveness. I really enjoyed getting to know Jake's large family and hope that we'll see more of the Silver family in the future books.
Aria is a pediatric cardiac surgeon who excels at work but lacks confidence in who she is in her personal life. Haunted by her twin sister's memory who lived life so differently, she must come to terms with who God has made her to be. Jake and Aria's love is passionate and all-consuming but also self-sacrificial and they challenge each other to be better and to strive for more.
And Ham! I am hanging onto the edge of my seat for Ham's full story to unfold. Some of his backstory is told in this book and that's just a carrot dangling until The Price of Valor releases in October!
I don't know how Susan May Warren does it (and I say this every time I read her newest release), but she ramps up the quality of her novels with each new book. If you enjoy contemporary romance with plenty of action, you will love this book and series. The book will grab you from the first page with its raw, heartfelt writing, intense action sequences, deeply-layered and complex characters worthy of your love, and spiritual truths that we all need to remember.
I received a copy of the book from Revell/Baker Publishing via JustRead Publicity Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
Another wonderful story that grabbed me from page one.

First thank you, Susan May Warren for writing another beautiful story. I did not want it to end.
Aria met Jake when the rock climb she went on with her girlfriends went horribly wrong and they got stuck on a mountain & Jake and his friends were called in to rescue them. Jake & Aria ended up stuck together on the side of that mountain for 2 additional days. But since then they had no contact with one another even though they live very close to each other.
Now Aria and Jake are attending the birthday party for the daughter of one of their mutual friends. While there they talk a little and Jake suggests that she take a vacation so she enrolls for the medical conference being held in Miami. Sun & fun! But Aria has not been watching the news or weather. But once she sees clouds start moving into the area she realizes that this could be bad.
Jakes family is watching the news and the coverage of the hurricane and Jake immediately starts calling Aria but she is not answering. After a few more calls he makes the decision to hop a flight and go down. Once down there he immediately begins searching for her.
Aria refused to leave on what turned out to be the last chopper, instead choosing to stay behind for 2 ladies she met that could not travel. Once he finds Aria they look for a place to hold up and that place ended up being the hospital where the medical conference was held and where he found Aria helping to evacuate & just as the chopper leaves again ( with the promise it returns for her) Jake shows up and a couple of people who could not travel. Jake was slightly stunned, she had chosen to remain.
While Aria and Jake are working together to help the people who stayed behind, the chemistry and attraction they feel continues to grow. Will they be able to get out of their own way to let God work in them both individually and as a couple?

Susan May Warren’s new series starts off with a BANG! THE WAY OF THE BRAVE (Global Search & Rescue Book #1) introduces Warren’s new set of high intensity characters that her readers will love! Former pararescue jumper Orian Starr remains haunted by a rescue in Afghanistan that went horribly wrong. He’s self-exiled himself to his home in Alaska. Even though his buddy Hamilton Jones is highly recruiting him to join his elite rescue team, he just cannot bring himself to do it.
Former CIA profiler and psychologist Jenny Calhoun’s yearly extreme challenge is her way of coping with guilt for her role in a top secret mission in Afghanistan that went all kinds of wrong. One of the casualties is that it may have cost Jenny her one chance at love.
When a horrific storm hits Denali, these two people are thrown together (both literally and figuratively) and must learn to take a leap of faith in order to make it off the mountain alive. They are surrounded by a talented group of friends and it is going to interesting to learn about them in the following books in this series. I enjoyed this book and cannot wait to join the group again in Warren’s next book!

I don’t know how Susan May Warren does it, but she continually produces first rate novels. Her latest is one more example of what a master she is. The Heart of a Hero is Jake’s and Aria’s story. We were introduced to them in The Way of the Brave, and Jake’s story is one I’ve been looking forward to reading. I am especially fond of the trope where the hero can’t see he’s good and worthy. Jake is such a character and you can’t feel anything but love and admiration for him. He continually demonstrates his inner goodness by his willingness to sacrifice himself, if necessary, to protect and save the people he loves. This Global Search and Rescue series is more character driven than previous series by Warren, but I like that about it. There is plenty of action in the latest offering, but like its predecessor, it takes a while for it to crank up. Once it does crank up, though, it is a definite page turner. As always there is the spiritual element in the book. I’m very fond of that too. Warren does a fabulous job of showing any reader that no matter what we’ve done or how far we feel we’ve strayed, God is right there waiting for us to just give Him control. If you’re not particularly religious or Christian, don’t let the faith element stop you from reading The Heart of a Hero. It’s a five-star in my opinion, and it will entertain you. I received an ARC, but have ordered the book for my Susan May Warren collection
