About the Book
A history of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict told from the Palestinian perspective, arguing the period since the Balfour Declaration of 1917 has amounted to 100 years of colonial war against the Palestinians.Book Synopsis
A landmark history of one hundred years of war waged against the Palestinians from the foremost US historian of the Middle East, told through pivotal events and family history
In 1899, Yusuf Diya al-Khalidi, mayor of Jerusalem, alarmed by the Zionist call to create a Jewish national home in Palestine, wrote a letter aimed at Theodore Herzl: the country had an indigenous people who would not easily accept their own displacement. He warned of the perils ahead, ending his note, "in the name of God, let Palestine be left alone." Thus Rashid Khalidi, al-Khalidi's great-great-nephew, begins this sweeping history, the first general account of the conflict told from an explicitly Palestinian perspective. Drawing on a wealth of untapped archival materials and the reports of generations of family members--mayors, judges, scholars, diplomats, and journalists--The Hundred Years' War on Palestine upends accepted interpretations of the conflict, which tend, at best, to describe a tragic clash between two peoples with claims to the same territory. Instead, Khalidi traces a hundred years of colonial war on the Palestinians, waged first by the Zionist movement and then Israel, but backed by Britain and the United States, the great powers of the age. He highlights the key episodes in this colonial campaign, from the 1917 Balfour Declaration to the destruction of Palestine in 1948, from Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon to the endless and futile peace process. Original, authoritative, and important, The Hundred Years' War on Palestine is not a chronicle of victimization, nor does it whitewash the mistakes of Palestinian leaders or deny the emergence of national movements on both sides. In reevaluating the forces arrayed against the Palestinians, it offers an illuminating new view of a conflict that continues to this day.Review Quotes

An outstanding book."
--Eugene Rogan, author of The Arabs: A History "A riveting and original work, the first to explore the century of war against the Palestinians on the basis of deep immersion in their struggle--a work enriched by solid scholarship, vivid personal experience, and acute appreciation of the concerns and aspirations of the contending parties in this deeply unequal conflict."
--Noam Chomsky, author of Failed States: The Abuse of Power and the Assault on Democracy "Brave, brilliant, and magisterial, this outstanding work of historical scholarship is also full of high drama and fascinating narrative. You can disagree with Khalidi but you cannot afford to miss the opportunity of arguing with him."
--Homi K. This book is sure to become a classic account."
--Elizabeth F. Thompson, author of Justice Interrupted: The Struggle for Constitutional Government in the Middle East "This book is a remarkable interweaving of three distinctive strands: a deeply researched history of the struggle between Zionist aspirations and Palestinian resistance; an analytical framework that places the conflict within the context of settler colonialism; and a personal family history that brings the narrative alive. Newcomers and specialists alike will learn much from reading this sweeping account."
--William B. Quandt, author of Peace Process: American Diplomacy and the Arab-Israeli Conflict Since 1967 "Learned and clear-eyed, this compelling history of the long war to deny Palestinian rights exposes a century of blunders, misjudgments, and willful deceptions. Highly recommended."
--Stephen M. Walt, coauthor of The Israel Lobby "Beautifully written and accessible, this book is an invaluable examination of the Palestinian-Zionist encounter as a struggle against settler-colonial domination, not as an issue of conflict resolution--a vital difference, necessary for a deeper understanding of the war and for its meaningful resolution. The Hundred Years' War on Palestine illustrates, at its core, the refusal of Palestinians to accept their own defeat and their desire to live as equals with Israelis in a land they are destined to share."
--Sara Roy, author of Hamas and Civil Society in Gaza: Engaging the Islamist Social Sector "As in any book about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, there is ample room for debate and controversy. And as in any book by Rashid Khalidi, there is history, erudition, politics and passion aplenty. There is also his tenacious conviction that 'there are now two peoples in Palestine, irrespective of how they came into being, and the conflict between them cannot be resolved as long as the national existence of each is denied by the other.'"
--Rob Malley, International Crisis Group CEO and White House Coordinator for the Middle East under President Barack Obama "Rashid Khalidi makes clear that the Zionists could not have created modern day Israel without abundant help from Britain and the United States. A must read for the growing number of people who are interested in understanding the real roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."
--John J. Mearsheimer, coauthor of The Israel Lobby "With moral passion and analytical rigor, Khalidi skillfully unearths the narrative of a long and bitter national conflict, providing a multitude of timely, acute, and original insights. This compelling book is a must read."
--Zeev Sternhell, author of The Anti-Enlightenment Tradition "In a painfully sober analysis of what made Zionism, an anachronistic colonialist enterprise, so successful, Rashid Khalidi also shows how Palestinians defy fatalism and refuse to vanish. His book is a tribute and contribution to his people's perseverance."
--Amira Hass, author of Drinking the Sea at Gaza "This fascinating and instructive blend of autobiography and history should be read by anybody who wants to understand the tragedy of Palestine and the Palestinians."
--Patrick Cockburn, author of The Rise of the Islamic State "Rashid Khalidi has produced a sophisticated and insightful historical analysis of the Palestine-Israel conflict that is enriched by deep knowledge, clear and critical views, and his own experiences of key moments."
--Ian Black, author of Enemies and Neighbors: Arabs and Jews in Palestine and Israel, 1917-2017 "This searing account makes clearer than ever the often deliberately understated colonial nature of the Palestinian experience--and it reminds us of the Palestinians' extraordinary capacity to remain steadfast despite the local and global forces arrayed against them."
--Saree Makdisi, author of Palestine Inside Out: An Everyday Occupation of Culture

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great Book! Really gives perspective on the current GENOCIDE happening in Palestine at the moment! I would give this book a 7/10 and does give a lot of good insight. There’s a lot of harsh things that the palestinians are going through right now which this book explains and also tons of history based around the war at the moment. Rashid Khalidi (author) is a great person. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a very thought provoking and informational book on the history of Israeli-Palestinian relations. The book is written as something like a historical biography; the author’s own family stories are interwoven within the historical presentation. I appreciate the sprinkling of photos here and there. For the real historical enthusiasts, there are pages of notes that provide references on where the historical information was found. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I just finished reading The Hundred Years of War on Palestine by Rashid Khalidi and it really helped to open my eyes. Khalidi does not just give a history lesson but brings you into the story through his own family’s experiences. Showing that the conflict is both deeply personal and political. He makes a strong case that what’s been happening isn’t just a conflict but a long running effort to push Palestinians out of their own land. It will challenge everything you thought you knew. I appreciated the maps included along with pictures of devastation to better understand the realities of it all. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] “The Hundred Years War,” by Rashid Khalidi really opened my eyes. Khalidi Doesn’t give you a history lesson – he brings you into the story by his own family experiences, showing how deeply personal and political this conflict is. Just this portion of the book where he speaks of his own wife’s pregnancy, really grounds the conflict to a very human, relatable level. It’s not just a mass of faceless, nameless people anymore, it has to do with himself and the stakes his own family faces. He makes a strong case that what’s been happening isn’t just a “conflict,” but a long running effort to push Palestinians out of their own land. Extremely thought-provoking and challenging. If you are open – minded, this is a must read for you to gain another perspective on the current conflict in that region of the world, no matter what you believe about it today. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This was a good book. It's not a dry academic text. The author blends personal family stories with historical analysis, which makes it feel both personal and sharply political. Whether or not you agree with all his views, it offers a powerful perspective. I like that it includes some pictures for context. I also especially appreciate the notes section at the end. There are almost 50 pages of notes, and being able to flip back there to find more information was very helpful. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is The Hundred Years War on Palestine by Rashid Khalidi. This is a history book based in the Middle East about the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. The most important takeaway for me is that there are historical photos that help to paint the picture during such a dense literature. I also appreciated the way the author wrote this book vastly different than a history book and you almost feel like you are there from his perspective. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] If a somewhat historical point of view or biography is what you’re looking for - this book is for you. What I found most interesting was that the book is more as told by the authors personal experiences and thoughts mixed with the actual history. The book did a very good job of citing certain references to add notes in the book to look back at as the reader. Additionally there were some historical photos in it which equally helped bring the history to life. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is the book The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine. What stood out to me most in this book was the addition of some photos. I really appreciated that these photos were real and not just drawings. It helped me to actually visualize the events, and make connections to the author and his feelings and thoughts on the history. Another stand out for me was that it was easier to understand knowing it is from the author’s point of view acting as a historian. I received an incentive to write this review.

I especially appreciated the interesting revelations throughout which gave me a deeper understanding of events I thought I already knew. A compelling and eye opening read! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Rashid Khalidi's The Hundred Years' War on Palestine is exceptionally educational, especially for readers with minimal prior knowledge of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The book is structured as a sweeping, yet accessible history, breaking down a century of conflict into 6 distinct periods starting with the Balfour Declaration in 1917 and moving through key episodes such as the 1948 Nakba, the 1982 Lebanon invasion, and the ongoing peace process. Overall a great education read! I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine is a easy read full of facts and information. There are photos and a really helpful index. This is written as a history book but the author has in depth knowledge mixing in his own family history which is what makes this such an interesting history book. For example the author speaks to the damage and condition of his neighborhood and the effect to his family after the siege of Beirut. I received an incentive to write this review.

Rashid Gives a first hand Account about conflict over Palestine from his perspective. He focuses on six turning points In this conflict which he framed as declarations of war on Palestinians. you can tell that the purpose of his book is to show readers that the Century Long conflict is rooted in colonial decisions with backing by the US and Great Britain. it’s definitely a good read to open your eyes and see another person’s perspective on the situation. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am someone who loves factual reading and learning while reading. Before this book I had very little true knowledge of the true fight over so so so many of years in Palestine. This book does an excellent job of walking through the history and including photos and Infograph’s along with citations to help you really grasp your learning. I liked that the book really broke down the events to give thought and perspective from the Palestine side of any particular event in that “year band” or chapter. I found it so interesting to read what has happened since I have been alive in the area and to imagine what that’s been like for people living there. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This book was a powerful and eye-opening read. What I appreciated most was how Khalidi weaves together historical facts with personal family stories, it made the book feel grounded and deeply human. He frames the Israeli-Palestine conflict as a century long struggle against colonialism. It’s not a legit read, but it’s incredibly informative and thought-provoking. I’d recommend this book if you’re trying to understand the conflict from a more personal and historically rich perspective. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Rashid Kahlidi’s The Hundred Years War in Palestine is an informative and thought provoking read on the turbulent and often tragic history of Palestine through 2017. The book frames the Palestinian experience as one of ongoing colonial confrontation rather than a series of isolated conflicts. The emphasis on international complicity and regional dynamics makes it not just a history of Palestine but commentary on global politics as well. I’d love to see an updated edition that brings the story forward to 2025 in light of the ongoing Gaza crisis and renewed international attention. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Lightweight book with heavy content. Illustrations, maps and document prints make it more lively and readable. The narrative is compelling due to historical context and personal accounts woven together. The authors analysis presents a Palestinian perspective which is often marginalized in the mainstream Zionist media voices. A great read to understand the enduring struggle, not just over land. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I haven’t gotten around to reading this entire book yet because it is really dense. That’s not a bad thing, it’s just heavy! the conflict between the Israeli and Palestinians is very complex and it’s interesting finding out about the origins of the conflict and what’s happening now as a result of things that happened many, many years ago. If you’re a history buff this is the book for you. I received an incentive to write this review.
