Book Synopsis

For fans of Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events and Trenton Lee Stewart's Mysterious Benedict Society, here comes the final book in the Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place, the acclaimed and hilarious Victorian mystery series by Maryrose Wood.

Unhappy Penelope Lumley is trapped in unhappy Plinkst! Even the beets for which Plinkst is inexplicably famous fail to grow in this utterly miserable Russian village. Penelope anxiously counts the days and wonders how she will ever get back to England in time to save all the Ashtons--who, she now knows, include herself and the Incorrigible children, although their precise location on the family tree is still a mystery--from their accursèd fate.

Her daring scheme to escape sends her on a wildly unexpected journey. But time is running out, and the not-really-dead Edward Ashton is still on the loose. His mad obsession with the wolfish curse on the Ashtons puts Penelope and the Incorrigibles in dire peril. As Penelope fights her way back to her beloved pupils, the three brave Incorrigibles endure their gloomy new tutor and worriedly prepare for the arrival of Lady Constance's baby. Little do they know the danger they're in!

In this action-packed conclusion to the acclaimed series, mysteries are solved and long-lost answers are found. Only one question remains: Will Penelope and the Incorrigibles find a way to undo the family curse in time, or will the next full moon be their last?

Review Quotes

Praise for The Mysterious Howling (Book #1): "It's the best beginning since The Bad Beginning and will leave readers howling for the next episode." - Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
"Jane Eyre meets Lemony Snicket in this smart, surprising satire of a 19th-century English governess story. Humorous antics and a climactic cliff-hanger ending will keep children turning pages and clamoring for the next volume, while more sophisticated readers will take away much more. Frequent plate-sized illustrations add wit and period flair." - School Library Journal (starred review)
"How hearty and delicious...Smartly written with a middle-grade audience in mind, this is both fun and sprinkled with dollops of wisdom (thank you, Agatha Swanburne). How will it all turn out? Appetites whetted." - Booklist (starred review)
"With a Snicketesque affect, Wood's narrative propels the drama...pervasive humor and unanswered questions should have readers begging for more. " - Publishers Weekly (starred review)
Praise for The Hidden Gallery (Book #2): "The undercurrent of "something wicked this way comes" and the signs of impending trouble for both governess and charges make the air here thick with (dreadful!) possibilities. Questions about the children's backgrounds, Penelope's connections to them, and Lord Ashton's own wolfish behavior set the stage for the next act of this most excellent adventure." - Booklist (starred review)
"Another series of uproarious escapades. fans of the first book will be happy to go along for the madcap ride." - School Library Journal
"[A] madcap sequel. Great fun, and it wouldn't be optoomuchstic to expect more to come." - Kirkus Reviews
Praise for The Unseen Guest (Book #3): "Still howling good fun." - Kirkus Reviews
"Whets the appetite for the next installment in this wonderful series. A must-have." - School Library Journal
Praise for The Interrupted Tale (Book #4): "Happily, the mysteries deepen at Ashton Place in this fourth volume in the Incorrigible Children series. Once again delightful wordplay and a plot that snakes itself around a suspicious family tree add to the deliciousness." - Booklist (starred review)
"It is all great fun and delightfully complicated-an essential purchase for libraries owning the previous three titles." - School Library Journal
