Description

About the Book

The only thing Bri Duval loves more than baking is romance, so she creates a lovelock wall right outside her Parisian-style bakery in the middle of Kansas. When a love-scorned travel writer arrives in town, things start to heat up--in and out of the kitchen.

Book Synopsis

The only thing Bri Duval loves more than baking petit fours is romance. So much so, she's created her own version of the famous Parisian lovelock wall at her bakery in Story, Kansas. She never expects it to go viral--or for Trek Magazine to send travel writer Gerard Fortier to feature the bakery. He's definitely handsome, but Bri has been holding out for a love story like the one her parents had, and that certainly will not include the love-scorned-and-therefore-love-scorning Gerard.

Just when it seems Bri's bakery is poised for unprecedented success, a series of events threaten not just her business but the pedestal she's kept her parents on all these years. Maybe Gerard is right about romance. Or maybe Bri's recipe just needs to be tweaked.

Novelist Betsy St. Amant invites you to experience this sweet story of how love doesn't always look the way we expect--and maybe that's a good thing.

Love doesn't always look the way we expect

The only thing Bri Duval loves more than baking petit fours is romance. So much so that she's created her own version of the famous Parisian love-lock wall at the bakery where she works in Story, Kansas. She never expects a video involving the wall to go viral--or for Trek Magazine to send travel writer Gerard Fortier to feature the bakery. He's definitely handsome, but Bri has been holding out for an epic love story like the one her parents had--and that certainly will not include the love-scorning Gerard.

Just when it seems the Pastry Puff is poised for unprecedented success, a series of events threaten not just the bakery but the pedestal she's kept her parents on all these years. Maybe Gerard is right about romance. Or maybe Bri's recipe just needs to be tweaked.

Cute Small Town

4 out of 5 stars
I could not put this book down. St. Amant created a wonderful and unique small town bakery, and I found myself wishing I could visit and sample the sweets. I enjoyed imagining the residents and their little quirks that made them so unique. Gerard was grumpy and anti-love, which only made him slightly more swoon-worthy. St. Amant brought him to life, and I can’t help but wonder what he looks like in her mind. I want pictures! I loved the idea of a little bit of Paris brought home. The love angels are like most matchmakers, they just want to see everyone in their town happy and in love. Bri was in love with her parents story, and what she thought real love should be like. I enjoyed watching her learn that true love isn’t always roses and poems, and that it sometimes ends up being a lot of work. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Contemporary Romance. I can’t wait to see what St. Amant does next! I received a copy of this book from Revell Publishing and was in no way forced to post a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Deliciously enjoyable romance

4 out of 5 stars

Set in a small-town bakery brimming with the tantalizing aromas of freshly baked macarons and petits fours, The Key to Love, by Betsy St. Amant, is a deliciously engaging novel about misconceptions, expectations, truth, faith, and love. Opposites attract within the pages of this book as the main characters pursue their dreams, grapple with uncertainty, face their doubts, and help each other find the strength to embrace a future that is marked by authenticity, vulnerability, and hope. The characters in this novel are truly interesting and memorable. Their choices and struggles are believable and resonate with honesty, veracity, and emotion. As they contemplate their choices and persevere through the consequences that follow, they develop greater insight and confidence. It is truly uplifting to read about characters who bravely pursue wholeness in the aftermath of grief and disappointment, giving space for their hardships to grow in them a generosity, a wisdom, and a faith that inspires others. Satisfying and entertaining from the first page to the last, Ms. St. Amant has crafted a contemporary novel that is truly thoughtful, and endearing. The Key to Love is a special book that is exceptionally witty, romantic, and relevant. It is a genuine pleasure to recommend it. *I was given a copy of this book by the publisher/author. A review was not required. The review I have written is voluntary and contains opinions that are entirely my own.

clean romance

4 out of 5 stars

I enjoyed reading this clean, funny, romantic fiction story-although I wouldn't consider it Christian fiction. Both characters had relationship insecurities that made them sarcastic and quick to shut down before expressing their "real feelings" and emotions; but over time they were both able to talk and share which made them more relatable and likeable. I'm glad Bri learned what the "key to love", what "real love" was about from her family and friends and that is was not some big elaborate happily ever after-hard to achieve love. This was a fun, light hearted story. The characters were good but not really a book I would read again because of their constant sarcastic nature. I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.

Fun Read

The Key to Love by Betsy St Amant is the fun story of Bri. Bri loves to bake and can’t wait to meet her perfect mate. She holds dear the history of her parents romance as well as her mothers love for baking. Her greatest delight is to work at the bakery in town run by two motherly type matchmaking sisters who look after Bri since her parents passed away. Bree is looking for the perfect French romance. It’s all she can do to contain herself as she waits for a marriage like her parents. Enter Gerard. He is sent to the beautiful town of story Kansas to do a magazine piece about the local bakery and the matchmaking sisters. The last thing Gerard is looking for is romance. The Key to Love is a fun novel that will keep the reader engrossed. In fact, I simply couldn’t put it down. It’s an enjoyable read. Of particular interest will be those who love baking and France. However it’s a fun story regardless. I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review which I am happy to do.

Sweet Romance

4 out of 5 stars
Suspenseful - 5 years ago
Bri Duval’s is on a quest to find the secret ingredient for her mother’s macaron recipe and working at the Pastry Puff has given her ample opportunity to experiment with her recipe. But there is more going on at the bakery than just baking. Aunt Mable and Aunt Agnes, The Puff Pastry owners, take it upon themselves to spurn on a few romances. The evidence is clearly seen on the Parisian love-lock wall behind the bakery where dozens of locks are displayed by all the couples they have matched. When a video goes viral about their love-lock wall and reporter Gerard Fortier comes to do a story on it, Bri seizes the opportunity to generate business for the bakery. The bakery is Bri’s only connect to her deceased mother and she is desperate to save it from being sold to her ex-boyfriend, Charles. This story reminded me of a classic Hallmark movie. The big city reporter, Gerard, comes to the small town and immediately there is friction between the two main characters. As their relationship progresses, an attraction develops but neither want to acknowledge this attraction. Finally, the attraction becomes unbearable and they kiss. But then there is a big misunderstanding and the friction returns until the misunderstanding is ironed out and their relationship is back on track. I felt the pace of the romance was a bit fast and therefore unbelievable. However, I did appreciate that both of the main characters learned something about themselves and matured in the narrative. Bri discovers something about her parent’s relationship that forces her to reevaluate how she defines love and marriage. At the same time, Gerard has a photography mentor that he sees in a new light when he discovers more information about his personal background. Overall, it was a cute romance story with a charming setting and a cast of diverse, and sometimes quirky, characters. It is an easy to read and lighthearted book.

Book Review--The Key to Love by Betsy St. Amant Well, you had me at "Macarons" and "Petit Fours" I thought, when I was asked if I wanted to read and review this book. :) What can I say, I am a dessert lover, whether it's baking them or eating them, I like all kinds of sweets and since I worked in a bakery for 5 years as a Cake Decorator I guess decorating them would also be a favorite thing of mine to do. I also enjoy visiting bakeries, especially small quaint hometown ones, so this book very much appealed to me and was fun to read. Plus, it was about Love Locks which I also have an affinity for, so I would say based on my opinion this book would be a very enjoyable book to read for anyone like me who loves bakeries, French pastries, Love Locks, and romance. Plus, it has a beautiful cover. :) This romantic story has a few twists and surprises weaved into it that keep the reader wondering until the end how it will all play out. There is not a lot of drama, but it is quite emotional in places and there is also some humor added to lighten some of the heavier scenes. All in all I think this is a delightful contemporary romance that is easy to read and will have you craving Macarons, Petit Fours and Paris before you are finished. :) This book was sent to me free by Revell Books, a division of Baker Publishing Group, in exchange for an honest review. All comments are my own.

A Scrumptious romance you won’t want to put down!

The Key to Love should definitely be made into a movie! This delightful romance full of plot twists, characters you’ll cheer for, and delectable pastries caught my attention from the get-go and kept me turning pages as fast as I could read. And although The Key to Love is perfect Hallmark movie material this book isn’t all fluff (or Puff)—the characters do some serious soul searching and reliance on God before they can discover the secret recipe for love.

Love it!

Love love and love this story!! Love doesn't always come into our lives looking like we think it will. Sometimes it's the exact opposite, but that's what makes life so interesting and proves that God has a sense of humor. The important thing is to always remember that our identity is never measured by our love story status. We were made by the One who loves us more than we could ever imagine and the story that He has written for us will be just perfect. I received a copy from the publisher, all thoughts are my own.

Coffee plus petit fours add up to sweet romance!

This was such a sweet diversion! With hints of the oft-cited Pride & Prejudice, Bri and Gerard are engaging and relatable - and watching them get over their fears and foibles as their attraction grows is a frothy delight for readers. This is a gentle romance rooted in faith, though the author doesn’t beat her readers over the head with Bible-thumping. For lovers of modern romance, this is better than a Hallmark movie in book form! Just make sure you have your favorite sweet treat and coffee on hand when you settle in to devour this literary confection! I received a copy of the book from Revell/Baker House Publishing Group and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

Delicious romcom

5 out of 5 stars
"Somehow, being in Story - more specifically, watching Bri interact with her community - was like having a front-row seat to a play, one deserving of a snack and the full experience." Contemporary romcom doesn't get better than this! Nestled in a tiny town called Story, Kansas, this novel brings together everything that makes contemporary romance delicious - a quirky and charming small-town life, a fun premise, a well-paced plot with some surprises, deep and multi-dimensional characters who are totally lovable, excellent banter and witty dialogue, and gentle reminders of spiritual truths that often get lost in the busyness of life. And this book will definitely make you hungry so you'd better grab a snack before settling down for a wonderful read that will make you laugh out loud, hurt, sigh, and feel satisfied as the story unfolds. Bri and Gerard are complete opposites; Bri is the cheerful, naive, romantic pastry chef who is compassionate and loving. She finds fulfillment in embracing her community and hates taking risks. Gerard is a toughened and embittered world-travel writer whose sole goal is a promotion and thrives on adrenaline. Yet they're thrown together by a meddlesome boss who sends Gerard to write about a love-drenched French-themed cafe and two meddling "love angels" who find every opportunity to push Bri towards Gerard. Delightful small-town life tumbles around them as they work on the article; both Bri and Gerard learn life lessons as their worlds careen closer together with late night snack deliveries, freezing dives into a fountain, late autumn picnics, and old love letters. If you enjoy contemporary romance, you will absolutely love this book. I received a copy of the book from Revell/Baker House Publishing Group and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

Hilarious Fun Read

Thumbs up graphic, would recommend

This is my first book by Betsy St. Amant and I was hooked after just the first chapter. Don’t worry I am not going to give away a lot about the book because then you would not be able to experience the joy of reading it in the same way but I will just say that one thing that Betsy mentions in that first chapter reminded me of a movie called The Princess Diaries. Also, there is one part of the story that I can definitely say tells me if you loved Courtney Walsh’s Paper Hearts book then you will love this one too. Betsy does such an amazing job of describing things that I can picture myself sitting right there inside Pastry Puff and drinking a cup of coffee while eating a really great macaroon! Even if for some reason you are not drawn in just by looking at the gorgeous cover of this book I still ask that if you like romance books with a little bit of comedy thrown in that you give this book a chance. I just don’t believe you’ll regret it if you do. Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the book in order to give an honest review.
