Book Synopsis
From the street smarts of a 15-year-old, rose a triumphant entrepreneur whose resilience and determination forged a path to success. The Language of Success is a story of survival, self-improvement, and accomplishment.
In these pages, the author walks us through her sometimes-tumultuous upbringing in a 'milky-white' town of little diversity, while striving to understand the bigger world around her. From leaving home at 15 and facing daily challenges of survival, to finding those paths to nontraditional education and opportunities. This unorthodox route into the world of business and later linguistics, showcases the opportunities and 'go with your guts' intuition, that often lead to places you never dreamed of.
The lessons learned through years of minimum wage jobs and struggle were later her building blocks for success. Over the course of two decades, she built her company, Empire Interpreting Service, into a leading Language Service Provider (LSP). Theresa bootstrapped her company and molded it into a respected, award-winning organization that has been cited as the 'gold standard' in its field.
Review Quotes
Thank you for sharing The Language of Success with me. I find the personalization angle very impactful. You are giving voice to what many potential entrepreneurs go through with impostor syndrome and self-doubt. The narrative about your dad, his impact and the part he played in your origin story was amazing. The "lesson" at the end of each section is wonderful, whether it is customer service, employee care or guerilla marketing, they were all fantastic. I am currently teaching a course through Syracuse University titled Foundations of Entrepreneurship for people with disabilities. If this book was available, I would assign it as required reading.--John Liddy, CEO, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Instructor, Whitman School of Business, Syracuse University
The Language of Success is a story that needs to be told! You sharing your personal journey is inspiring and can help others who feel they are alone in their journey from starting at below the bottom to being successful. It can even be an inspiration for those thinking they will not make it. Your "Aha!" moment (of recognizing the needs of your interpreters), was thought provoking. Most businesspeople do not think of the workers' needs, you are different. This is going to be a great book for people contemplating starting their own business as well as people who are at the top feeling they are the only ones out there alone. Life taught you some life lessons for sure, lessons of resourcefulness, lessons of how to not forget where you came from, and most importantly, how to love/care for yourself so that you can care for others! And I wish I had security footage of you in the Wegmans Beer cooler!--Susan Freeman, Manager/Interpreter Services, SUNY Upstate Medical University
Theresa's story is very inspiring, and a must read for anyone looking to follow their dream and start a business. The work she's done with Empire Interpreting Service has helped so many across the globe and, as the leader of a woman-owned business, she has succeeded with perseverance, drive and purpose.--Stephen Fournier, KeyBank, President, Central New York Market
