Description
About the Book
"The value of having a good mentor is obvious and is also backed by rigorous research. They guide us, open doors, and help us advance our lives and careers in ways we could not do on our own. What is often overlooked is that the benefits of giving back, as good mentors do, lead to a prodigious list of personal gains: fulfillment, satisfaction with life, a sense of productivity, purpose, and value, a longer, healthier (physical and emotional) life, and symbolic immortality through legacy. Most people think of mentoring as hierarchical. Mentees look for a mentor, a few rungs up the ladder, to open doors, guide, and provide opportunities for them. Traditional mentorship is simple and often very effective. But this is NOT the only form of mentorship. There is also lateral mentoring which solves the problems so many of us face: feeling disconnected, a lack of direction, worries about solving work problems, and feeling intimidated by those above us at work. When we engage in lateral mentoring, we can let our guard down. A friend or colleague is someone you can be vulnerable with, whether they work in your department, another department, or are a friend outside of work. We feel comfortable expressing vulnerability with those we know, like, and trust. When we ask for help, those we trust will usually leap into action to help. The goal of this book is to inspire individuals to engage in mentoring naturally, whether hierarchically or laterally, in work settings and in their home life. Mentoring not only helps foster passions, but it helps with work life balance, and brings a feeling of community and fulfillment"--Book Synopsis
Learn how a mentor relationship can make your life more fulfilling
The Mentorship Edge: Creating Maximum Impact through Lateral and Hierarchical Mentoring explores how we connect to others, feel valued, get pleasure from life, and believe our lives have meaning through forming mentor relationships with others. This book covers traditional hierarchical mentorship we're all familiar with, along with lateral mentoring, where you connect with a friend or colleague--someone you can be vulnerable with--whether they work in your department, another department, or outside of your organization entirely.
Insight in this book is drawn from The International Association of Top Professionals 2025 Top CEO and Mentor of the Year Deborah Heiser's experience running The Mentor Project, a nonprofit mentoring organization with more than 100 mentors at the absolute top of their fields. In this book, readers will learn about:
- The proven benefits of mentorship in both work and home life
- Mentorship in various fields, including business, research, entrepreneurship, and art
- Classic examples of the power of mentorship, like when Steve Jobs asked Steve Wozniak for engineering help when he was at Atari
The Mentorship Edge is an essential guide to demystify the special concept of mentoring and inspire individuals to engage in mentoring naturally, whether hierarchically or laterally, based on their goals and passions.

Praise for THE MENTORSHIP EDGE
"There are angels amongst us, and in this day and age of huge challenges, massive evils and injustices left and right, our angels need much more than wings. They must be entrepreneurs who never give up, mentors who pull up generations after them, resilient leaders by example who fix our brokenness and give opportunity to young adults where there was none. None such more impactful, important and impressive than Dr. Heiser. In the end, we can best measure our lives by those we helped. Debbie has saved thousands of lives, enabling them and encouraging them to thrive. I tip my hat. She is my hero!"
--PETER SAMUELSON, Entrepreneur, Philanthropist, Executive, Author, Film Producer
"I had the good fortune to be introduced to an amazing lady four years ago who reintroduced me to the importance of mentorship, what mentorship really is, and the many layers involved. I have been truly blessed to have had some of the greatest research hierarchical mentors while learning the craft at NASA, what I did not realize was that my Friends-of-Charlie (FoC) network was a lateral mentor community that would later save my life on orbit during my Space Shuttle Mission STS-114. Dr. Deborah Heiser understands mentorship in all its aspects and realizes its importance in helping us live happy, full, and rewarding lives. Her gift at storytelling and her easy writing style make this knowledge transfer such a joyful experience. Debbie is now a trusted forever FoC."
