About the Book

"Russian-born shopkeeper Vera Sorokina and Irish-born penny dreadful author Brogan Donnelly join forces to take down a criminal enterprise that is threatening shopkeepers in South London in 1865. Along the way, the two find love and romance as they fight for a chance for their own "happily ever after.""--

Book Synopsis

London, 1865

Vera Sorokina loves reading the Penny Dreadfuls and immersing herself in tales of adventure, mystery, and romance. Her own days are filled with the often mundane work of running the book and print shop she owns with her father. The shop offers her the freedom and income to employ and protect the poverty-stricken Londoners she's come to care about, and it gives her father something to do other than long for their hometown of St. Petersburg. She is grateful for the stability in their lives, but she often feels lonely.

Brogan Donnelly was born and raised in Ireland, but has lived in London for several years, where he's built a career as a Penny Dreadful writer. He has dedicated himself to the plight of the poor with the help of his sister. His membership in the secretive Dread Penny Society allows him to feel he isn't entirely wasting his life, yet he feels dissatisfied. With no one to share his life with but his sister, he fears London will never truly feel like home.

Brogan and Vera's paths cross, and the attraction is both immediate and ill-advised. Vera knows from past experience that writers are never to be trusted, and Brogan has reason to suspect not everything at her print shop is aboveboard. When the growing criminal enterprise run by the elusive and violent Mastiff begins targeting their area of London, Brogan and Vera must work together to protect the community they've both grown to love. But that means they'll need to learn to trust each other with dangerous secrets that have followed both of them from their home countries.

Review Quotes

"Eden continues to build the overarching mystery and skillfully handles secrets and secret identities. Interspersed chapters of Penny Dreadfuls delightfully foreshadow the main action. Readers who enjoy chaste romances and also love a good mystery will enjoy the Dread Penny Society exploits and will look forward to what comes next."-- "Booklist"

So fantastic!

Absolutely well done! This was a fantastic addition to the Dread Penny Society series. I have been looking forward to Brogan's story as his character is the strong, silent type who is always there to help but never seeks the spotlight, and this one did not disappoint! Vera was a great addition to the cast as her kindness and concern for the less fortunate along with her shaded past mirrors Brogan's and the rest of the penny dreadful authors. I love how much research Sarah Eden does for her books and felt like I was given a snapshot of life in small part of London during the Victorian era - the speech, the social conditions, the plight of orphaned children - the historical details were seamlessly included in the story and it was fascinating. I thoroughly enjoyed the Penny dreadful installments included throughout the book. I feel like the author is dropping clues inside them help me solve the overarching mystery but I am just not piecing them together right. I have a feeling when I finish the series I am going to look back and think "ahhh, so that's what that meant!" This book is more of a a suspenseful mystery more than a romance but I didn't really mind! The moments of romance between Brogan and Vera were very sweet and the creativity of the storyline was enough to keep me engaged. I enjoyed every page from first to last. This is the third book and I highly recommend you read them in order or there will be too many parts that will leave you confused. I am anxiously awaiting the next installment! I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

Great Book Three!

I know from watching Sarah over the years how much work she puts into her novels and I am such a fan. The modern tone in her clearly well-researched books is vastly appealing and beyond appreciated. There is something so charming about this series. I love the unique and conceptual way Sarah has built this universe in a Victorian England setting. It's genius how she weaves the plots of the penny dreadfuls - with their own unique voices - within the main storyline, in this case, of Brogan and Vera. They have the odds stacked against them. In a very proper - with an unproper underbelly - London, an Irishman and Russian woman just might have the perfect commonalities that bond them together. As with the first two in the series, the romance is secondary to an over-arcing and intricate mystery. The penny dreadfuls on their own are well-written. and plain fun. While I think the book can be read as a standalone, I think there is more enjoyment by reading the series in order. There are several continuously building elements and moments as an overall plot throughout that might be missed otherwise. I've already purchased the audiobook because I adore Justine Eyre and her flair for accents, intonation and pacing. Thank you to Shadow Mountain for the gifted copy and NetGalley for the e-arc. All thoughts in this review are my own.

I loved the first two books of this series and I loved this one too. Sarah Eden is a master at characters; she always delivers on making me feel like I know the characters and showing progression through the story. Brog and Vera are both so well written along with the rest of them. I love the growth of their friendship throughout the story and the chance to learn more about their pasts. I love the penny dreadfuls as we get 3 unique stories in one book. The talent it takes to write in 3 different styles is amazing. If anyone wants a fun read, choose this book! I couldn't put it down. I think it might be my favorite of the series so far. The action has really heated it up and I can't wait to read the next one. #netgalley #themerchantandtherogue
