Book Synopsis

Romance and mystery come full circle in the fifth and final book of Sarah M. Eden's best-selling Victorian Proper Romance series.

London, 1866

Móirín Donnelly has spent the last five years working in the shadows for the Dread Penny Society, a secret fraternity of penny dreadful authors who use their profits, influence, and street smarts to protect the poor and vulnerable of Victorian London. But spending so much of her life in secret is taking its toll on her soul--and her heart.

When members of the Dread Penny Society begin disappearing, Móirín turns to her friend Detective Constable Fitzgerald Parkington for help. The two have developed a friendly rapport, and Móirín feels like she can trust him, though perhaps not with all of her secrets.

Fitzgerald Parkington has a sixth sense when it comes to tracking down criminals, which is why he's recently been transferred to the Detective Department at Scotland Yard. But when roadblocks and red tape keep him from tracking down the criminal mastermind known as "The Tempest," he must rely on the one woman who has unexpectedly captured his heart--the brash, bold, and fiery Irish lass, Móirín Donnelly.

As the Tempest's deadly reach threatens to overwhelm all of London, Móirín and Fitz are caught in an elaborate game of cat and mouse that leads down back alleys, through dark London buildings, and right to the gates of Kensington Palace. Móirín has one chance to save Fitz and the Dread Penny Society from the Tempest, and she might have to sacrifice her one chance at love to do so.

Review Quotes

"Eden wraps up her Victorian-set Dread Penny Society series in style with a perfectly matched pair of protagonists and a danger-infused, sweetly romantic story line that includes cameo appearances from starring characters featured in previous books as well as delightful extracts from two penny dreadful stories sprinkled into the plot."-- "Booklist"

"Thrilling. The mystery is just as strong as the romance and the chemistry between the leads is palpable. Eden packs a punch with this one."-- "Publishers Weekly"

"Eden's final Dread Penny Society novel (following The Bachelor and the Bride) thrills with Fitz and Móirín racing to solve the Tempest's deadly hide-and-seek games, while their witty and playful banter keeps their love story as spirited as the characters themselves. Highly recommended."-- "Library Journal, starred review"

Dear Lady Eden, You have done it again! I do hope you threw a celebration of massive proportions, for this conclusion to the mysterious, gripping series of Dread Penny authors and their fight against all the evils of the London underbelly, was truly magnificent. As per the other books in this series, my darling husband and I read this book together. We were quite smitten and captivated. At no time in the reading did we find our minds wandering or struggling to care much about the characters or their plight. Rather, we were completely invested in the entire story, to the point that we stayed up far too late one evening to finish. This is no small accolade, as darling husband does not appreciate staying up late for any reason when he must work the next day. Moirin and Fitz are the most delightful couple. I adored their wit and playful banter, and I loved watching their relationship play out. There was a lot of good growth in this one, with both characters growing into the kind of people they needed to be. And it was really quite remarkable how much they needed and completed one another. Two characters more perfectly suited would be difficult to find. The romance was stellar and swoony (Fitz is so good!), and I loved the elements of timeless love. And of course, I could not have been more thrilled to find the entire cast of characters from the previous books woven throughout this story. My heart was happy at seeing them and hearing their names again. We are big fans of the penny dreadful inserts into the main story. It adds such a fun element to the overall story, and makes these books unique. And each installment of a dreadful, or chapter from the primary story, leave off in such a way that we simply must continue. The way this one ended kept us on the edge of our seat and guessing right up to the very end. We were completely engrossed and could scarce be bothered to put the book down for trivials, such as eating or sleeping. It was a spectacularly epic finale to the memorable series. Your forever fan, Jessica **Thanks to the publisher for the gifted copy. I have provided this honest review of my own volition.

It's hard to believe we have reached the end of the Dread Penny Society. These characters feel so rich, unique, varied, that it's difficult sometimes to remember they aren't living people. I find myself wishing for more backstory, more epilogue, more detail, more life for all of them. Because, honestly? It will never be enough. The primary series arc does not disappoint. Tension abounds - twists and turns at every corner. Who is safe? Better yet, who will remain safe? That's the great question. I won't say more, because this book is best enjoyed entirely cold. Go in without knowing ANYTHING ... and watch it play out. My only frustration with the book is that it has a somewhat abrupt ending. While I wouldn't expect it to have an entire volume of epilogues (though one could dream...), I wanted to see more reward post-climax. If you somehow tripped onto this one without reading the other four, don't even think of starting at this point. Begin at the beginning and work your way through. While each book focuses on a different DPS member, they very much build consecutively, and a reader would lose so much of the story's weight by reading out of order. Start with "The Lady and the Highwayman" -- "The Queen and the Knave" can wait a bit. Thank you, author and publisher, for the advance copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.

The Queen and the Knave is masterfully written. Eden really outdid herself with this book! Highly recommend The Queen and the Knave, as well as the entire Dread Penny Society series. The plot throughout The Queen and the Knave is incredibly nuanced and detailed. So many different elements of the earlier books in the series come back into play and are woven together beautifully. This bit of my review will be a bit spare so as to avoid spoilers, but I can say that I was incredibly impressed with how many seemingly insignificant details were actually quite significant; the subtlety made for a compelling read. As with the earlier books, the included Penny Dreadful stories -- as penned by 'Mr. King' and 'Chauncey Finnegan' -- complement the main story of the book perfectly. I loved how Mr. King's "The Queen and the Knave" mirrored much of Moirin and Fitz's story, while also adding some magical elements (I loved the pine marten queen especially!). "Poisie and Pru: Detectives for Hire" showcased so much of Moirin's humor and cleverness in a lovely way too. I absolutely loved how both penny dreadfuls were interwoved with the main story -- it made The Queen and the Knave a very hard book to put down! My absolutely favorite part of this book was getting to know both Moirin and the Dread Master so much more. Both had independently been such compelling characters throughout the series. I'd been rooting for Moirin to get her own book since the beginning -- she was one of my favorite characters very early on. Getting to experience her thoughts and feelings while reading the book was an absolutely lovely journey. I so enjoyed her relationship with Fitz too -- so often, love finds a way even when circumstances are quite unfavorable. Thank you to Netgalley, Shadow Mountain, and Sarah M. Eden for the eARC copy. All opinions are my own.
