The Pan American Games, second only to the Olympics as the biggest international sports competition in the world, are held every four years (during the year prior to the Summer Olympics) under the sponsorship of the International Olympic Committee. The first Pan American games were scheduled to take place in Buenos Aires in 1942, but the outbreak of World War II forced the games to be postponed. The first Pan American Games were held on February 25, 1951, with more than 2,500 athletes from 22 countries participating.Book Synopsis
