About the Book
James has a bunch of balloons, each of which holds a special memory. As his grandfather ages and loses his own balloons, James discovers that he is gaining new ones. Full color.Book Synopsis
A 2019 Schneider Family Award Honor Book! What's Happening to Grandpa meets Up in this tender, sensitive picture book that gently explains the memory loss associated with aging and diseases such as Alzheimer's. James's Grandpa has the best balloons because he has the best memories. He has balloons showing Dad when he was young and Grandma when they were married. Grandpa has balloons about camping and Aunt Nelle's poor cow. Grandpa also has a silver balloon filled with the memory of a fishing trip he and James took together. But when Grandpa's balloons begin to float away, James is heartbroken. No matter how hard he runs, James can't catch them. One day, Grandpa lets go of the silver balloon--and he doesn't even notice! Grandpa no longer has balloons of his own. But James has many more than before. It's up to him to share those balloons, one by one.Review Quotes

This is a beautiful book about how people lose memories as they age and the impact on those who love them. I read it to my 94 year old mother who has advanced dementia to help her understand that losing memory does not make a person stupid. I love the idea of memories being carried on by our children and grandchildren.

Sweet story with beautiful illustrations. The imagery of memories as balloons was great & even my 5yo picked up on how many "balloons" the dog or baby had. What a great concept for anyone, but especially would be touching for kids with relatives that are aging or have memory loss.
