What a Trip to Appalachia!

From the suspicious and cantankerous to the grieving and misunderstood, Ann H Gabhart flawlessly pens a character driven story filled with insights into the Appalachian culture of the early 1900s. I felt like I was living with these characters, scaling the Kentucky hills, and struggling with its occupants to obtain food, shelter and warmth. I also came to empathize with the frequent heartache they endured. This story helped me gain a sense of the vastly different cultures of this time and location. I truly loved sweet, ten year old Ada June and her dog, Bo. Her life, I’m sure, mimicked those true survivors that were cared for by relatives, neighbors and Appalachia itself. The courage she displayed, along with that of Mira in moving to this unknown place and the other brave women dispersed throughout this story, was inspiring and challenging. I enjoyed every minute of this story of God’s providence and grace. This book is suitable for teens and older with no inappropriate intimate scenes and no bad language. I received this book from the author/publisher free of charge, with no expectation of a positive review.

I am a huge fan of Ann H Gabhart's books and was excited to have the opportunity to get my hands on her newest release, The Song of Sourwood Mountain. I believe it is among my favorites that I have read by her to date. I adored Mira and Gordon's story. I instantly felt a connection to Mira from the start. I understood the thoughts and feelings she was going through. I enjoyed the chemistry between Mira and Gordon and wanted to see how it would end for them. A beautiful heartwarming tale to read. I loved it. I am giving The Song of Sourwood Mountain a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who love to read clean historical fiction, particularly early twentieth century Appalachian era. As always, I will be looking forward to more releases from Ann H Gabhart in the future. I received a paperback copy of Ann H Gabhart's The Song of Sourwood Mountain from the author, but was not required to write a review, nor a positive one. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

The Song of the Sourwood Mountain by Ann H. Gebhart shares the tale of Mira Dean's simple life as a schoolteacher who goes through the rhythms of daily life. She pours herself into her students while grieving the loss of her fiance who died after a long battle with tuberculosis. Mira lives her ordinary life in 1910, when suddenly Gordon Covington, a missionary, shows up at Sunday church service. Gordon has not seen Mira since their days long ago at school, when he suddenly, boldly, asks Mira to marry him and join him in the mountain area of Sourwood teaching the children and joining Gordon in mission work. Mira is taken about at this ridiculous idea. Why would she ever leave her comfortable life in her town? When Mira's life turns upside down, Mira is faced with decisions. What will she decide? Will she ever come to truly love Gordon? The Song of Sourwood Mountain was a fascinating read. I could not put it down and couldn't wait to read the rest of the story. It does focus more on Mira's relationship with Gordon and her life in the town of Sourwood and briefly touches on her heartbreak with her late fiance. Ann writes in such a way that tugs at your emotions and keeps the reader engaged. This book was enthralling and and kept me reading on. It features romance and historical fiction. I would highly recommend The Song of Sourwood Mountain. I can't wait for Ann's next book.

Fantastic Historical Romance

The Song of Sourwood Mountain by Ann H. Gabhart is a beautiful story about learning to love all kinds of people through obedience to the Lord. Mira's story begins with an unexpected offer and whisks you away down a path of faith and trust as she strives to follow God's will for her life. Some of my favorite things about this book: A marriage of convenience. A secluded mountain town. Rich in mountain-life culture. Vibrant characters. Tension between the mountain people and their outsider preacher. (Also made me nervous and kept turning pages!) A strong faith element is woven throughout the story. I loved all the scripture and strong faith arcs for Mira and Gordon. I think we can all relate to them in some way! And a tale that grabs your interest from the first line! This is another great novel by Ann H. Gabhart. I love how she brings her characters to life and immerses you in the time and place. Fans of historical romance would enjoy this story, especially if you like more deep or spiritual-themed books. I was given a copy of this book by the publisher with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are my own.

The Song of Sourwood Mountain is a story that immediately had me loving the kaleidoscope of characters that paraded across the pages and settled right into my heart. Reminiscent of Catherine Marshall’s Christy, this story really brought the mountain culture of early-twentieth-century rural Kentucky to life for me. I couldn’t get enough of it! I couldn’t stop reading, as enamored with this book as I was, and am only sad that it couldn’t be even longer so that I could enjoy more of these characters’ lives and spend more time with them! Gordon, Mina and Ada June had me tangled up around all of their fingers and hoping that they could all have the desires of their hearts and the happiness and love that they each so desperately craved! Author Ann H. Gabhart has penned an absolute keeper with this novel! It was my first by her, but it most certainly will not be my last!

I absolutely loved this story. Set in the early 1900s, partially in Louisville, Kentucky, and largely in the Appalachian community of Sourwood, Kentucky, the story is filled with memorable, believable characters that readers will, for the most part, come to love and respect. Of course, there are a few more cantankerous ones to keep the story lively. Readers will share in the characters' joys and sorrows, and may come to see how the two can coincide in their own lives. They may also come to see that they, like some of the people of Sourwood, have more love to give and more backbone to support themselves than they ever realized. As with her other books set in Appalachia, Gabhart shows and understanding of, and a high regard for, the people there, honoring their ways and avoiding caricatures. The colloquial language she incorporates enhances the tale. I give The Song of Sourwood Mountain five stars and am very grateful to have received a complimentary copy from Revell via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

I didn’t want to put this book down as I quickly fell into Mira’s life that she had relegated herself to since the death of her fiancée. But….God has different plans and as doors close God opens one to a life completely different than what she envisioned. I immediately fell in love with Ada June and in my opinion she carried the story to new heights. In the midst of all the changes in her life Mira also finds the blessings and as she grows and learns the ways of the Appalachian people she finds they have become a part of herself. I loved the characters and the storytelling as it’s like sitting on your porch listening as a storyteller immerses you in what they have to say which is part of Appalachian history. I love that this author has that ability and I am always satisfied when I turn the last page. From the beautiful cover to the ending you will find you can’t devour it fast enough but that you want to slow down so you can savor the words. I highly recommend as you won’t want to miss meeting characters that stay with you. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher/author. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

The Song of Sourwood Mountain

The Song of Sourwood Mountain is another delightful visit to the Kentucky mountains. I love Ann H. Gabhart's easy storytelling style of writing, where I feel myself right there with the characters. Teacher Mira Dean was naturally hesitant at first to accept the totally unexpected marriage proposal from Gordon Covington who she hadn't seen since they were classmates years before. He is now a preacher in those Kentucky hills and is in need of a school teacher and why not a wife too? Mira handled all the sudden changes in her life better than I might have. She loved children and had a strong desire to be a mother. It's not easy adapting to mountain life or being accepted since she (and Gordon too) were "brought in." One of my favorite characters was Ada June, a ten-year-old orphan. I'd love to see another book featuring her, perhaps ten years later. This book made me smile and also shed a few tears. I loved it. I received a complimentary copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

I loved this book from the very start. When that happens I read fast, wanting to see how things develop in the book. I loved the Christian aspects in the book which is very heart-warming to me. I love this type of book, so much! It kind of reminds me of my husband's grandmother whose husband settled in Hawaii and sent for what was called a "picture bride" who he married after 3 days of their meeting. Well Mira wants to be a wife and mother, but when she is surprised to be told by preacher Gordon Covington that he was called by God to preach and that he should marry Mira, she was not happy about this turn in her life. She was a schoolteacher with a good job and a place to live. But does God also have plans for her and causing a little redirection in her life? Such a good read. I am so glad I was able to read this book and I wouldn't have wanted to miss it. This author has definitely become a favorite of mine and I don't want to pass by any of her books! I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
