From the Back Cover

2024 Selah Award Winner, 2024 Christy Award Winner, and Carol Award Finalist

For the first time in his life, Pete has everything to lose.

After years of drifting, fifty-year-old Pete Ryman has settled down with his potbellied pig, Pearl, in the small Montana town of Sleeping Grass--a place he never expected to see again. It's not the life he dreamed of, but there aren't many prospects for a high-school dropout like him.

Elderly widow Wilma Jacobsen carries a burden of guilt over her part in events that led to Pete leaving Sleeping Grass decades ago. Now that he's back, she's been praying for the chance to make things right, but she never expected God's answer to leave her flat on her face--literally--and up to her ears in meddling.

When the younger sister Pete was separated from as a child shows up in Sleeping Grass with her eleven-year-old son, Pete is forced to face a past he buried long ago, and Wilma discovers her long-awaited chance at redemption may come at a higher cost than she's willing to pay.

"Katie Powner brings both humor and heft to the page as she celebrates simple pleasures and not-so-simple love."--JULIE CANTRELL, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Perennials

Thank You for Another Amazing Story!

Only Katie Powner can take a garbage worker, a wise Native American, and a regretful widow and create an unforgettable, award winning story that will stay in your heart for a long while. Oh. I can’t forget another primary character - a potbellied pig named Pearl. She is pretty much in charge of the whole group and they know it….but certainly wouldn’t admit it. I firmly believe that God weaves people and circumstances in and out of our lives. So, the culmination of this band of misfits in Sleeping Grass at this particular time is endearing to me. Each are sitting in their present because of past decisions. Some they had control of, some were made for them and some are just part of life. Love, care and forgiveness can be hard teachers. They each include a relationship and relationships cost us something. Christina Moore nailed this story in audiobook. The voices were unique and easy to follow. Well done. This book is suitable for teens and older with no inappropriate intimate scenes and no bad language. Topics-foster care, spousal abuse, fighting, drinking (not graphic-each handled with spiritual wisdom).

A Captivating Story!

Reading this book was a heartwarming and soul-searching experience that will remain with me for a long time. The characters are realistic and yet totally unique, including a pot-bellied pig named Pearl. It isn't often that a pig plays a major role in a contemporary fiction novel, but Pearl is Pete Ryman's steadfast companion and one of two friends that he can count on. Until...he returns to Sleeping Grass, Montana, and slowly creates a network, including his sister and nephew, an older lady who holds a secret to Pete's past, a troubled young woman struggling to escape her abusive husband, and Windy Ray, Pete's Indian friend who possesses a very deep faith with his Creator. Author Katie Powner paints stunning word pictures and I was totally captivated by her emotional story! The Winds Blows in Sleeping Grass shows hurt and forgiveness; hope and second chances. I recommend it to all who enjoy contemporary Christian fiction. I received a copy of the book but there was no obligation for a favorable review. All opinions are my own.

The Wind Blows in Sleeping Grass is absolutely outstanding! I’m a huge fan of Katie Powner’s writing and this newest release was everything I was hoping for. The story takes place in Montana and is filled with well developed, engaging characters that I quickly became invested in. I enjoyed that this book was the perfect blend of serious and whimsy, even including a touch of tense adventure. The author expertly gives an emotional read that it is filled with the value of friendship and second chances, as well as weaves both hope and faith into the story in an encouraging and relevant way. I loved this book so much I was torn between turning page after page and wanting to read slower so that I could delay coming to the end. Overall, a wonderfully delightful story that is not only beautifully written, but one that stays with the reader long after it is over. Definitely recommend! I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Lovely Small-Town Story With Older Characters

Katie Powner is a new-to-me author, but I knew I wanted to read this book when I saw that the main characters were on the older side. The story is told from the viewpoints of 50-year-old Pete Ryman and 80-something Wilma Jacobsen. Pete is finally trying to turn over a new leaf and settle down after a life of drifting and making unwise choices. He’s got his trusty sidekick Pearl, a potbellied pig, a faithful friend, and a steady, albeit smelly job. He never expects his life to get turned upside down by a meddling widow who wants to make amends for the past, a long lost sister who needs help, a potential love interest, and a loser guy bent on revenge. I loved this quirky cast of characters, especially the old Native American man, Windy Ray. He has a strong faith and a way with words for sure. And you can’t not love a rescue pig and a three-legged dog, right? The characters deal with many faults and failures that come with living in this world, but the story is filled with hope and forgiveness. It got tense toward the end, and I was like — this better turn out like I want it to! Maybe it did. Maybe it didn’t. Either way it was a great read! I look forward to checking out Katie’s other novels. Trigger warning: one character lives with a controlling, abusive boyfriend. Nothing graphic. I received a complimentary paperback from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

The heart of this book is about value of each of God’s creatures, “He says (Windy Ray) everything the Creator makes has value, but a man must choose whether he wants to see it.” This book is filled with people with broken lives and tough choices. The question is can you forget what you have been told your whole life and move forward to a new and promising future. Katie Powner has such insight, and the characters all have depth. I found myself cheering for Pearl, the potbellied pet pig in the story. The main character is Pete Ryman, a fifty-one-year-old that has finally settled down in Sleeping Grass after drifting most of his adult life. Pete has been a loner suddenly finds himself with family and friends here in this small town. Will he find what he may have been looking for his whole life, forgiveness, love and acceptance? My thanks to the author and publisher for an early copy of this book. The opinions here are entirely my own.

Set in the northern plains of Montana, this is a beautiful, poignant story of regrets, reconciliation, family, and friendship. The heart-touching, soul-stirring narrative ran the gamut of my emotions as it kept me captivated from the beginning to the wonderfully satisfying ending. Expertly crafted unique, realistic characters, who I quickly and easily connected with, came to life touching my heart and lingering in my memory. I greatly appreciate the valuable faith lessons concerning trusting God for real peace which results from His all sufficient grace. I also enjoyed the apropos literary references scattered throughout the story. Plus, who would have guessed that lessons on the worth of every individual could be taught using a delightful potbelly pig? Another powerful Katie Powner story added to my all-time favorites list. I recommend this book as a must read for Contemporary Christian fiction fans. I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
