Book Synopsis
Frank Herbert's Dune series is one of the grandest epics in the annals of imaginative literature. Selling millions of copies worldwide, the series is science fiction's answer to The Lord of the Rings, a brilliantly imaginative epic of high adventure, unforgettable characters, and immense scope.
An immediate sequel to Frank Herbert's seminal masterpiece Dune Messiah. The legendary Paul Atreides has disappeared into the desert, blind, and is presumed dead--leaving his entire Imperium in turmoil and without a leader--and his newborn twin children without a father or mother, but under the protection of the Fremen warrior Stilgar. On Dune, Alia struggles to hold her brother's vast empire together with Duncan Idaho, but powerful forces and ancient enemies seek to destroy a vulnerable government. Reverend Mother Mohiam has been executed along with her fellow conspirators who aimed to destroy Paul Muad'Dib, and Paul's wife, the Princess Irulan, is imprisoned. Lady Jessica is on Caladan, far from the heart of the Imperium, but upon hearing the news of her son's loss, she and Gurney Halleck rush to Dune, hoping to stop an empire from falling into chaos. But Paul's former friend, Bronso of Ix, now seems to be leading opposition to House Atreides, intent on destroying the powerful legacy of Muad'Dib. Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson have written a landmark novel that bridges the gap between Frank Herbert's Dune Messiah and Children of Dune.Review Quotes
"The Winds of Dune is filled with the same psychological complexities that were a hallmark of Frank Herbert's books. It twists and turns on matters of trust, loyalty and the meaning of honor. Familiar characters are brought back to life with poignant clarity and the suspense and tension never let up. Even knowing what comes next in Children of Dune, I was hooked by this tale and enjoyed it immensely. It is a worthy addition to the Dune saga." --Denver Times
"Fill[s] in the gaps between the late Frank Herbert's classic Dune and its sequels Dune Messiah and Children of Dune.... An important addition to the Dune chronology." --Library Journal, starred review "This satisfying tale from Herbert's son and Anderson follows Jessica, the mother of galactic emperor Paul Atreides.... Fans of the original Dune series will love seeing familiar characters, and the narrative voice smoothly evokes the elder Herbert's style." --Publishers Weekly "One of the monuments of modern science fiction." --Chicago Tribune on Dune "I know nothing comparable to it except The Lord of the Rings." --Sir Arthur C. Clarke on Dune "A portrayal of an alien society more complete and deeply detailed than any other author in the field has managed . . . a story absorbing equally for its action and philosophical vistas. . . . An astonishing science fiction phenomenon." --The Washington Post on Dune "Powerful, convincing, and most ingenious." --Robert A. Heinlein on Dune "Herbert's creation of this universe, with its intricate development and analysis of ecology, religion, politics, and philosophy, remains one of the supreme and seminal achievements in science fiction." --Louisville Times on DuneAbout the Author
