Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, and when exposed to air and moisture, it will naturally darken and develop a patina. A: Dear Melsan. These are breakaway screws. You can shorten them at the notches by using pliers.

Very Difficult
These pulls are beautiful but the breakaway screws included are terrible. These pulls are designed for cabinetry, which is typically thin wood, and the smallest length for the screws is way too long. The screws are meant for a thick piece of wood. It was a nightmare to try to break the screws small enough to where the pull was actually tightly on, and not hanging loosely off.

Beware of the screws
Handles are beautiful but beware they come with break away screws. For some people this might be a plus but it turned a 5-7 minute project into an hour, so I docked a couple of stars. Would have paid a dollar or so more to have standard screws at the two popular lengths included vs the break away screws.

Beautiful!
I have searched everywhere for hardware for a cabinet I'm revamping and this is the best aesthetic for the price point I have found. Quality is great. Screws were way too long to be useful and I couldn't find any in my toolbox that worked well but I actually just used adhesive tape to adhere them to my cabinet and so far so good!
