A: No. We bought a memory foam mattress because it doesn't need a box spring and is under 7in.

My daughter loves this loft bed. It is very sturdy. This is the 2nd one we have purchased (For grandmas house). The first one is 3 years old and still looks brand new. We live on an island where rust can be a big issue. The paint job on this bed is very thick and durable. Also received the package 3 days early !!
