Description

Book Synopsis

The start of a swoony, high-energy duology that Emily Lloyd-Jones, author of The Bone Houses, calls "reminiscent of classic fairytales yet brimming with a charm all its own."

"A world of glimmering fae that sparkles with mystery, adventure, and enchantment." --Andrew Joseph White, New York Times bestselling author of Hell Followed with Us

Iselia "Seelie" Graygrove looks just like her twin, Isolde...but as an autistic changeling left in the human world by the fae as an infant, she has always known she is different. Seelie's unpredictable magic makes it hard for her to fit in--and draws her and Isolde into the hunt for a fabled treasure. In a heist gone wrong, the sisters make some unexpected allies and find themselves unraveling a mystery that has its roots in the history of humans and fae alike.

Both sisters soon discover that the secrets of the faeries may be more valuable than any pile of gold and jewels. But can Seelie harness her magic in time to protect her sister and herself?

"Housman's stunning debut is the sort of love letter only an autistic author could write. Fae canon has been waiting for this one." --H.E. Edgmon, author of The Witch King

Unseelie is told through the perspective of Seelie, an autistic faerie changeling. Seelie and her twin sister Isolde look identical, but they experience the world in different ways. Seelie shies away from human interaction and touch, and often feels like an outsider. Seelie's chaotic fae magic, which she must learn to control, manifested in such a way that the twins had to leave home. Their goal is to bring home a fortune so that they can move with their parents to a place free of judgement. The story starts with a heist where they meet the mysterious pair, Raze and Olani. Forced to flee the city with a powerful enchanter in pursuit, the sisters pair up with Raze and Olani to embark on a dangerous quest for a magical treasure. Unseelie is a well-written engaging fantasy adventure with a road trip, journeys to faerie kingdoms, magical treasure, interesting characters and great world-building. The themes explored are those of sisterhood, found family, self-acceptance and the challenges of being neurodivergent. It is refreshing to see an autistic character written by an autistic author. This representation is sorely needed in the fantasy genre. I really enjoyed Unseelie and am looking forward to the sequel.

YA fantasy with neurodivergent rep

Iselia “Seelie” and Isolde are not your average twin sisters. Seelie is an autistic changeling with unpredictable magic. When the pair end up in the middle of a heist gone awry, they make some new acquaintances and find themselves on a mysterious journey full of fae secrets. Will Seelie find a way to control her magic so she can keep her sister and herself safe? UNSEELIE was a very interesting YA fantasy book. I loved the premise, especially that the main character was a neurodivergent female. There was great character development for Seelie. I enjoyed the other characters as well, though they were less developed. The worldbuilding was well done and I liked the different fantasy aspects. The beginning and end of the book had quite a bit of action while the middle felt pretty up and down in pace. The book is advertised as being “swoony” which I didn’t get a sense of but perhaps there will be more of that feeling in the sequel. UNSEELIE is book one of Ivelisse Housman’s The Unseelie Duology. I’d recommend it to fans of YA fantasy and anyone looking for neurodivergent representation. I will be looking forward to reading book two in the future.
