Full Access to interior via Lay Flat design.
DOES have a water bottle size side pocket. Front smaller zip pocket will fit a med. size book or probably a tablet. I haven't tried it out yet, but hoping the size and access works well for smaller airplane cabins, and trips with very limited luggage sizes.

Perfect Bag for European Vacation!
I purchased two of these for our European vacation to London, Porto, and Paris. They were fantastic bags for the "Personal Item" sized luggage and fit well under the seat in front of us on an Airbus A300-900neo Premium Select seat. I was especially seeking a backpack that would lie flat for packing and being able to quickly find items. The back pocket to go over the carryon handle made it easy to wheel around as we went through airports, train and underground rail stations, and walking through busting streets without the weight directly on our backs. There were times when we had to drag our luggage with us to locations we were visiting or to restaurants. No one ever seemed put off by our luggage. The pattern is very modern and classy! We made more than one flight attendant smile with our matching luggage. Our carryon was purchased separately elsewhere. Major bonus for the sturdy quality of the materials and stitching on this backpack! It is definitely going to get a lot of use with our upcoming travels. I would highly recommend this backpack in whatever style suites your fancy!
