Violife Just Like Mexican-Style Shreds Vegan Cheese Alternative - 8oz

This tastes like it’s vegetable shreds trying to be cheese. Which is exactly what it is.

This is one of my go to vegan cheeses. It’s affordable compared to other vegan cheeses and it melts pretty well. Not the best of the best when it comes to vegan cheese, but it’s a really good option if you’re on a budget. The Mexican style is one of my favourite kinds. I recently tried it in my sourdough recipe and it turned out so delicious!!

As lots of others have said, this "new and improved" product is terrible. I put a bunch on my pasta last night, just like I have many many times before. This morning, I am sick 🤢. I did a Google search for "VioLife cheese recall" thinking maybe some dairy had snuck in. I found these reviews, and now my symptoms today make sense. They changed the recipe, and now I can't eat it anymore. I'm so bummed because it used to be such a fantastic alternative for my allergies!

I bought bags and bags of this cheese and I was completely oblivious to the "new and improved" sign on the bag of cheese I purchased. However, this change is horrible. It completely ruined my homemade pizza. What was Violife thinking and why is there zero response from Violife to all of these reviews from loyal customers. If the recipe changed to save money then it will end up costing much more because no one will buy a second bag once they taste and see it. This is like the dairy free cheese from a decade ago that melted like an oil slick, smelled, and looked unappetizing. Violife had the perfect cheese and ruined it.

Transitioning into a vegan/plant-based diet: smell is strong and not quite cheese like. It smells kind of like a strong, sweet cake batter. The taste and smell improve a lot when melted. While still sweet, it does resemble cheese flavor. However, the texture when melted is a little thin and sticky rather than how milk-based cheese would be creamy. Additionally, this cheese is ranked 0/100 on Yuka partially because of the “smoke flavor additive”, which is claimed to have reproductive and carcinogenic risks and has been banned in the EU. I could see using this if you’re not super picky, you’re vegan and just want a melted cheese dish, but it’s not great and I will be looking at both alternative vegan cheese brands as well as attempting to make vegan alternatives from scratch at home.

It's just too smelly and stinky for me to eat. Even one shred can ruin a meal.

Why, Violife? WHY?? I am a vegan and I used to purchase at least four bags of Violife just like mozzarella shreds per month. You just lost a very loyal customer because this "new and improved" formula went right into my trash can. It's horrible. Absolutely vile. I am beyond disappointed. I have numerous digestive ailments and the old formula of violife was one if the few things I enjoyed eating that I can no longer have now.

WHY, Violife, WHY?? I am vegan with numerous health/digestive problems. Violife mozzarella style shreds were my one guilty pleasure that didn't kill my guts and then you changed the formula. It tastes awful. It's vile. It's absolutely not going to be a part of my diet anymore. I used to buy at least four bags a month. You just lost a very good customer.

I have had to avoid eating any dairy products due to health issues for over 10 years and finding a cheese alternative has been one of the biggest struggles, all the other alternative cheese have weird ingredients, yeast, taste awful and melt like plastic. But the violife cheese was the first brand I found with non dairy cheese that tasted like real cheese smelt like real cheese and melted like real cheese. It became one of the main ingredients in most of our dinners and after 10 years I could finally have more normal meals. But for some reason they completely changed the recipe to lower quality ingredients, making it so we no longer are able to eat it anymore. Along with it smelling horrible looking horrible and like plastic and it now taste horrible. Violife needs to change this back because you lost a customer for life, Just like Annies and So Delicious they built their brand on people with diet restrictions and once they become popular enough they turn their back on those customers who got them there.

This is the best tasting vegan cheese shreds. It makes a great vegan queso with cashew yogurt. This is my go to vegan cheese due to its flavor and consistency when melted. It has a great flavor and doesn’t have a chemical taste.

Decent flavor, melts like real cheese! This is an acceptable alternative for someone who is both lactose intolerant and allergic.

I hesitate to write this because this is already out of stock often - but for good reason! This cheese hits a specific note that almost all other vegan cheeses miss. I'm obsessed, it's a problem. I don't know what's different about this recipe but the tanginess should be applied to the other flavors too, it'd make them perfect too.

Decided to cut out dairy due to a medical issue and let me tell you this tastes just like cheese I’m so impressed and thankful that is tastes good, it makes sticking to my diet so much easier.

it genuinely tastes like cheese like it's literally the closest thing I've had to dairy cheese since i went vegan. i would fr sell my kidney for just a block of the Monterey jack, idk what sorcery they use at violife but i can eat this *vegan* cheese straight from the bag happily! anyway - melts great, tastes great, 11/10

Of the many brands now available, I still count on VIolife for Mexican shreds like this and single slices of mature cheddar. I often compete with the wife for the smoked provolone and she doesn't even need it! THanks for creating a better tasting product for a marginalized market!

Love this plant based cheese alternative! I always keep some on deck once there’s pasta in the house. I prefer using it as a topping for cooked meals, as it doesn’t taste great uncooked (personal preference, I guess). It melts very well, but does not reheat (microwave) well after cooking.

We love this product! It melts well for quesadillas, enchilada casserole, and so much more. My husband is a cheese aficionado, and it passes his taste test!

Taste is ok, diarrhea it causes is not worth it. Don’t recommend.

This cheese was not edible. The flavor was awful. It literally tasted like puke. Wish I hadn’t wasted my money on a whole bag.
