A: Greetings Lee and thanks so much for your question. The CDS303 requires a stereo amplifier or receiver and speakers or a pair of internally self amplified speakers to play music. The CDS303 only spins the disc so it needs to be amplified and put through speakers. Hope that helps and please let me know if you have any further questions. I'm here to help. Exceptional CD player

For me…No choice but Yamaha
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It was 1977 and at fourteen I had been saving all my money I had made working many odd jobs. I was saving for my first real stereo. At the time the best hi fi store in my area was Magnolia Hi Fi , and I had been looking at and testing out stereo receivers. The one that stood out that I could afford was the Yamaha CR-620. I eventually saved enough to buy it along with a pair of Advent speakers. The sound quality was amazing and all my friends would come over and be in awe of my stereo. I had that stereo for 25 years and to this day I will buy no other brand. When I needed a CD player to go with my Yamaha receiver I had purchased used on Facebook marketplace the only new piece I bought was the Yamaha CD player. My stereo is fully analog which I believe produces the best sound. I have it set up in my woodshop, and I gives me great joy every time I play it , and it takes me back when I was fourteen with my new CR-620.

Crystal Clear sound....

Compact Disc Perfection !!

What a treat!
I purchased this player to install in my main audio system that hadn't had a CD player for a few years. The original player flaked out many years ago so I used a hybrid DVR/DVD player instead. That unit was sold as I didn't need it anymore. I thought I would use my BluRay player as a source but the BD unit is hooked to an AV receiver that has ARC so every time I turn it on, the AV receiver and the TV turn on! The AV receiver is hooked to a 5.1 sound system that works for video but not for full range music. The audio system consists of a Carver C5 preamp and a TFM125 power amp, and DBX Soundfield 10 speakers. A real vintage set up! Once I hooked up the CD-S303 and played some CDs, I was thrilled with the result. I do have a smaller audio system in my studio that sounds decent, but this Yamaha player is fabulous and the difference is noticeable. The sound is clean and comes through without artificial coloring. I used to have an EQ in the system, mostly for older vinyl LPs but I definitely won't need an EQ with this player as it handles older CDs and lower quality recordings on CD-Rs well. For the price this is a great player and will fit a new as well as vintage system

No frills but competent player
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Very simple but well-presented product. It is solidly built with very few frills. I did not notice much difference when using the Pure Direct feature. Sound is richer than using a consumer-grade DVD player. A good entry level audiophile CD player.

Pretty nice
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Good sound quality. Quality buttons on player, and I far prefer symbols for functions opposed to text. Nice finish. Remote build could be better. Firmware updates are frustrating, needs to be fully plug and play. I know a lot of buyers value USB port but I'd prefer it without.

Great player for almost all of your needs
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] After latest FW update it works perfectly. Previously it won't play gapless live cds. Plays with great quality, even with cheap RCA cables. With professional ones you'd get an amazing performance. Playing via USB is good but inconvenient - it does not play in date-to-order but most often random. It does not jump or goes forward to subfolders, at least with me. You can buy a tiny usb card so it won't affect the aesthetics and enjoy.

Very satisfied

I was concerned about previous reviews of discs skipping. This unit came with latest firmware installed. Did have one or two discs skip, took them out cleaned up with a micro cloth, it worked. My CD collection has been sitting on shelves since the late 90's and some needed cleaning, they sound great. Excellent addition to my home audio system, its powered by a Yamaha RX-A6A. Very pleased.

Excellent Sound Quailty
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I enjoy vinyl and a good turntable, but I recently upgraded to a 100 watt Yamaha stereo receiver and wanted something to play the CDs I still had. This unit is a single CD unit with great features such as pure line. I am in no way an accomplished audiophile, but the sound quality is incredible through a pair of Polk Audio towers. I would strongly recommend this unit. Vinyl albums can be very expensive, but CDs are mostly $7-13 range and sound so good on this unit
