Pet gates are typically made from metal or plastic, and some models combine metal frames with plastic components.

Many gates include walk-through doors with auto-close and hold-open options. Some models offer extra-wide walk-through openings (for example, about 22 inches) and at least one model includes a built-in small pet/cat door.

To contain jumpers, look for extra-tall gates (examples up to about 55.1 inches) and gates that pair taller heights with narrower bar spacing to reduce openings for paws and limbs.

Bar spacing varies by model. Some gates advertise ultra-narrow gaps (around 1.37 inches), while others have wider gaps closer to 2 inches—choose narrower spacing for small or agile pets.

Installation varies by type: pressure-mounted gates typically require no tools or drilling; some models have minimal assembly with tools included; and hardware-mounted or stair installations generally require tools and secure fastening to walls or trim.

Freestanding play yards are generally portable and foldable, with preconnected panels that can be removed or repositioned. Some mounted gates can also convert to multi-panel play yards and fold flat for storage.
