Steel-cable jump ropes should be used on smooth indoor gym-type surfaces. Avoid rough cement or asphalt, which can wear down the cable coating and shorten cable life.

Manufacturers commonly advertise reinforced anchoring hardware, double-stitched straps and carabiners for attachment points, high-torque ratings for wave-style ropes, and durable materials such as alloy-steel cables or robust plastics for speed and weighted ropes.
