There are two main types: steerable knee scooters (knee walkers) designed for non-weight-bearing foot and ankle recovery, and larger powered 4-wheel mobility scooters with seats and batteries for longer travel and seated mobility.

Most knee walkers and travel scooters list a capacity around 300 pounds; some heavy-duty travel scooters are specified to support up to 330 pounds.

Many models offer adjustable handlebar/steering column heights and adjustable knee pads or seats. Some manufacturers also specify height ranges to help match users of different sizes.

Frames are commonly made from carbon steel, steel, iron or steel alloys. Some travel scooters use a lightweight aluminum/steel composite to reduce weight.

Assembly requirements vary. Many knee scooters list adult assembly required (some include tools or advertise tool-free/no-tools assembly), while at least one larger travel scooter is described as requiring no assembly.
