A: Hi Di! The 20 Gal. Latching Storage Tote is made out of Polypropylene plastic, and was designed for general household use. Sterilite only uses high quality FDA food safe grade plastics that are non-toxic. These plastics do not contain PVC's, Latex, Teflon, Phthalates chemicals, fungicides, Bishphenol A (BPA), or antibacterial chemicals. Nor do we use them in the manufacturing process of our items.

I recieved this as a pick up order. I wish I would have noticed when I picked it up, but the lid was completely cracked! Unfortunately, Target won't replace just the lid, so now I'm stuck with an unusable item.

These bins are both beautiful in color and great in size! The lids bend a little easier which causes discoloration if they are pressed onto sharper objects that may be stored and stacked. (Not a big deal)

I guess it you are using these bins for decorations or holiday items it might work. The structure of the bins are great but they smell AWFUL. I originally purchased 4 of these bins for my upcoming move, 2 for clothes, 2 for kitchen loose end things. I move a lot and im tired of wasting cardboard boxes so i figured why noy buy some good reusable bins. I started packing winter clothes and bed sheets blankets and left them for 1 day. When I went back to add more clothes to the bin and everything STINKS! Now I have 2 whole storage bins of clothes and sheets I need to re-wash in order to get the smell out. The structure is a good container for maybe holiday decorations or yard stuff or for your garage but not for any valuable items unless you want them to smell like harsh chemicals. I even had some bins with kitchen stuff in it and all of the kitchen appliances/ boxes of brand new unopened items all have the same awful smell. It's 100% the bins that smelled, not the items I put in them. Now if you see a lady out sniffing plastic bins at the store it's probably me making sure I don't make the same mistake twice.

Hi Gingergal! Thank you for your feedback on the 20 Gal. Latching Tote. Our Storage products are made of Polypropylene plastic. Polypropylene sometimes has a plastic smell (especially the clear products) when first purchased that dissipates fairly rapidly once the product is unpacked and put to use. Washing with a lemon scented or grease fighting detergent and rinsing thoroughly helps dispel any noticeable odor. Detergents sometimes adhere to plastics and you will want to wipe and rinse well. Air or towel dry.
