A: This is a transitional style shelf that can be used in just about any type of setup. The finish is natural, a clear coat of lacquer over the natural wood.

A: The assembly instructions are not the best choice in how to assemble it if you are doing it alone. As I have a number of these I figured out a better way where it is manageable without a second set of hands. I thought I had posted them here in my review but I don't see them here, in fact I don't even see my review here. I'll have to find it and copy/paste my instructions here. Took me about 40 minutes alone and some of that was due to having to balance things against the wall while keeping things aligned. What makes it hard is not whether or not parts fit - I found they did and actually there aren't all that many parts you have to assemble, - it is more that without a second set of hands to hold things it can be frustrating. The top is fully assembled (top is two pieces and it comes already put together). The sides are fully assembled. The individual shelves are fully assembled. You are putting the back slats in place, attaching the sides to the back, putting the top on, putting the shelves in. You have the hardware to screw in (pre-drilled holes). There are biscuits to put in. I chose not to glue them because if I needed to adjust something and the glue had set it would have been a real pain (I was doing this alone so getting things lined up without an extra set of hands was harder and took more time). I found these easier to assemble than the usual O'Sullivan sold at another big box store fake wood stuff - not to mention these are solid wood and not pressed wood, MFD or other cardboard like junk.

Sad that it arrived a little damaged, but with a little wood glue and bending out one of the shelf supports, it is a beautiful piece. All real solid wood, no pressed board, nice finish. The damage wasn't enough to even contact seller.

Great purchase!!
Nice looking shelf! It will be perfect for my daughters dorm! The foldable feature will make it a breeze to move! Many reviews mentioned it was difficult to put together but my husband had it together in no time! He found if you just tighten enough to hold in place but it’s still movable to add the shelving. Once it was put together he tightening everything to make it sturdy. Only con would be the wooden screw covers won’t stay in. But that’s an easy fix with a bit of wood glue. Btw, it’s real wood! Very pleased! Great deal!!

Nightmare to assemble
Screws require an Allen wrench that’s included. That said...if you strip the screw head you’re up a creek. Getting everything to line up without parts flopping is aggravating. Assembly design could be much better.

Looks nice enough and does what it is designed to do. Construction isn't great, there is something weird about the holes drilled for the screws not threading them properly. Thr metal for the screws as well as the allen wrench is cheap/soft so there are two screws I couldn't get all the way tightened because the metal deformed and would not properly engage the allen wrench. I put it together myself and the steps seem easy to follow but it would have been easier with a partner to hold things in place while the screws were being tightened.

FANTASTIC BOOKSHELF THAT'S EASY TO MOVE AND DURABLE
I purchased six of these about 10 years ago. I've moved four times, and since I'm a college professor, I load these shelves with books, binders of papers and notes, DVDs, even a laser printer. Now, after 10 full years, one shelf cracked, so I'm ordering another one. At $85, the cost for supporting all of my books and materials was only $8.50 a year, which is cheap at twice the price. I'm 63 years old and live alone, and I love it that these bookshelves are so easy to fold up and move. I can move them myself, and I'm not a strong woman. Other than unfolding the frame and folding the shelves into place, there is no assembly at all, which I also love. You can literally slide this out of the box, unfold it, and have it set up to go in no time at all. Opening the box takes longer and more effort than "assembling" the shelves. Yet the shelves are attractive and add to my decor. I would never buy any other type of shelf as long as these are available.

Great book case - Just the size I was looking for. Solid and holds the books nicely. Even though it folds up it is very solid when set up. No concerns of if folding up when you don't want it to. A little difficult to put together by yourself. It works best to have 2 people and 4 hands as the parts all kept wanting to fold up on assemble.

I have 4 sets of these. I love how they look, they are sturdy BUT the manufacturer has quality control problems. Target was helpful with respect to sending replacements for what I needed (although it was then a pain to have to go into the store to return these as they box is heavy and unwieldy). I would buy them again knowing that I might have similar issues because once they were together with "good" pieces they are a very good value for the money.
I managed to assemble them by myself and found it easier to do not using the directions they provided, rather doing things in a different order. When you are putting the shelves in tighten from the top down as it makes it easier to do. Also don't fully tighten the first side you do, as that makes it easier to get the washers in on the second side. Then go back and fully tighten everything. Leaning the entire thing against a wall makes it easier to do alone once you have both sides loosely attached (before that doing it on the floor helps). It would be much easier to assemble with a helper. As others have said, use your own tools. That makes it easier. BUT I managed to do it by myself and by the 4th one had it down to about 25-30 min.
The manufacture seems to have quality control problems. I never had a problem with holes lining up and actually you can sub out parts from one set of shelves to the other no problem. What I did find though is that on some of them the pieces of wood were 8ish inch pieces with WWW cuts at both ends attaching them to other similar pieces. In others they had none of that. Some had more flaws that were filled with putty than others. In a dark finish I don't think this would matter. I had chosen the clear finish and so it is pretty visible. All that being said Target was helpful and I finally got 4 sets of shelves with only a few wood flaws and no WWW small pices used.
