A Farewell to Woodmyst is the concluding tenth book in The Woodmyst Chronicles by Robert E Kreig, a satisfying, epic story for fans of fantasy. The story introduces readers to Alice, a dragon rider who has sacrificed everything to free her people from a tyrannical leader, Takmel. The great battle between Kayl'sro and the Maji is about to happen and Alice is unsure if she can redeem herself. But what chance can she have at redemption after what she's done to her beloved Stephen? And just how was she to get redemption anyway if she could not forgive herself? In this narrative, readers follow her epic journey as she battles against herself and ruthless enemies to win freedom for her land.
This is a great story, a novel with compelling characters and a powerful plot. Readers who love flying things and mythical creatures will enjoy this finale. The action is intense and it fills the pages of the story. Robert E Kreig creates a setting that is vivid, allowing readers to feel the natural elements like the snow and the wind and the effect they have on the characters. Images of places like the village of Erimoor, quaint and well-protected, with "the high ridge that surrounded it on all sides," and the township shielded by the onslaught of northern winds, are ones that readers can't easily forget. A Farewell to Woodmyst features conflict, with battles fought with swords and dragon fires. It is a highly imaginative story but doesn't fail to evoke the realism of a lived experience. I rooted for the protagonist - so deeply and humanly flawed - and how she evolves through the story. There is so much to enjoy in this epic fantasy, from the beautiful writing to the interesting plot, to the compelling characters.
