Description

About the Book

The only comprehensive guide to effective academic writing, designed specifically for military personnel, has been revised to reflect recent changes in communication technologies as well as new advancements in the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Book Synopsis

Academic Writing for Military Personnel is a manual for writing clear and effective academic prose. Authored by an experienced writing instructor and a retired military officer, both of whom teach in a professional military education institution, it is designed for members of the armed forces who are entering, or perhaps re-entering, the academic community, and having spent much of their careers either writing in the professional military context or not writing at all.

The book not only teaches officers how to write convincingly, but also explains why a sound grasp of academic writing can enhance their effectiveness in their regular duties, particularly as they reach the more senior levels of service. Chapters focus on the value of written communication skills, the difference between professional (staff) and academic writing, the research process, the writing process, academic professionalism, and common writing problems and challenges. A particularly innovative final chapter discusses how officers can use the knowledge that they have acquired through their professional experiences in the academic context. Specific examples - chosen with a military audience in mind - are integrated throughout the text to provide the reader with relevant and practical guidance.

The revised edition incorporates new examples from a more diverse set of authors, takes into account recent changes in communication technologies, and reflects new advancements in the scholarship of teaching and learning.

As the only comprehensive guide to effective academic writing designed specifically for military personnel, this book will be a crucial addition to the libraries of junior and senior officers in militaries worldwide.

Available formats: trade paperback, accessible PDF, and accessible ePub

Review Quotes

Academic Writing for Military Personnel is a short, focused, useful book... a welcome addition to the reference library of anyone in uniform.--Canadian Air Force Journal "http: //airforceapp.forces.gc.ca/cfawc/eLibrary/Journal/Vol4-2011/Iss2-Spring/Books/Academic_Writing_for_Military_Personnel_e.pdf"

The second edition of this book release is timely in today's modern era where
understanding how to clearly communicate facts and evidence is critical. Dr. Chapnick
and Dr. Stone bring the reader on a journey from start to finish, unpacking the multiple
layers that contribute to good academic writing. Starting from the initial research process,
through to the development of a thesis, and concluding with a lesson on how to source
other academics. Within this, the authors highlight an important writing concept that is
directly transferrable to many forms of written communication - know your audience.
Identifying and understanding the target audience directly informs how information is
delivered, and whether the message will resonate as intended. The authors demonstrate
how to do this firsthand throughout the book by providing clear and concise guidance that
can be easily leveraged by military personnel as they communicate with military and
civilian audiences, both within and outside The Defence Team.

--Major-General Major-Général (Lise) Bourgon, CMM, MSC, CD D/Comd CMP CAF WPS champion "Adam Chapnick"

In my former profession as an academic I read many books on academic writing over the years. This one ranks among the best.--MGen (ret'd) Herb Petras "Adam Chapnick"

More than a prescriptive style-guide, the not-so-hidden message in this book is that how you choose to communicate, impacts what you communicate. So like in our planning, choose deliberately and wisely.--LGen Lgén F.J. Allen, CMM, CD, Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, Vice chef d'état-major de la défense "Adam Chapnick"
