Wonderful Historical Romance!
5 out of 5 stars
Connie Saunders - 5 years ago
Ann H. Gabhart shares another story that centers around The Frontier Nursing Service and its founder, Mary Breckinridge, but this time her heroine is a young woman who leaves her Louisville, home for a summer job in Hyden, Kentucky. Set in my home state of Kentucky, and written by a favorite Kentucky author, An Appalachian Summer offers not one, but two, romances and a wonderful message of faith. I highly recommend this book to all who enjoy historical Christian romance.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. There was no obligation to write a favorable review. These are my own thoughts.

This book was such a pleasure to read.
First of all, the cover is stunning!
The book was paced slowly, deliberately, so the reader is able to savor and enjoy the book. I felt like I was experiencing the wonder and joy of new experiences and new friends, just as Piper was. I also was pulled into the setting through wonderful descriptions-the sun shining through the trees in the morning, the crickets chirping in the evening. It was wonderful!
This slower pace mimicked the slower pace of life in the Kentucky hills, so it was very appropriate and comfortable.
I also felt that I had plenty of time to get to know the characters-and what a delight Piper was! Although she had grown up in a privileged family in the city, she was anxious to help and learn what she needed in order to serve others. That, of course, provided some humor as she adjusted to life in the country.
I highly recommend this book to all readers of Christian fiction and women's fiction.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Revell, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

Book Review: An Appalachian Summer by Ann H. Gabhart
The year was 1933, America was in the throes of the Great Depression, causing an economic hardship for many.
In Louisville, Kentucky, Piper Danson’s family was one of those who were not affected by the sudden loss of financial security and though Piper should have been delighted at that, she really wasn’t because she was not ready to dress up and celebrate her coming out as a society debutante. Piper wasn’t looking forward to marrying a man her father chose for her, she wanted to marry for love, yet would society allow her to, she thought not as her life seemed to be controlled by her mother’s demands.
If you enjoy reading historical romance you will surely want to read this book. The story will take you from the ballrooms of high society to the Appalachian hills of poverty as you accompany Piper Danson in her quest to find freedom, love and God’s purpose for her life.
You will be amazed at some of the stark contrasts Piper has to face and overcome as a high society debutante who chooses to spend her summer as a horseback courier helping the Frontier Nurses in the Appalachian Mountains.
This book was very informative, inspiring and realistic. It is an easy read that will touch your heart in many different ways.
I received this book free from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group, in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

"Marry if you must, but only do so for love."
Piper Danson is watching her future disintegrate into a business contract before her very eyes; her father choosing a young man with the means to give her everything a woman could desire, minus any certainty of love. Sure, an arrangement with the highly desirable son of a railroad magnate might grow into deep affection over time, but Piper can't help but think that her heart still belongs to another.
"You have the rest of your life to wear fine clothes and gossip with your friends. But first, do something."
When given an opportunity to leave all talk of marriage behind in the city, Piper takes off for the mountains to joins a noble cause for the summer; volunteering for a horseback Frontier Nursing Service. Who would have thought that cleaning out stables, delivering medicines, assisting mid-wives, painting porches, and even skinning chickens could be so rewarding. And it is, until double trouble finds its way up into the mountains.
"How can you know . . . where He wants you to go . . . . what He wants you to do . . . But you can figure it out if you listen and watch. The mountains are a good place for doing that. You get up high in those hills and the Lord just seems nearer."
What a pure delight to read! . . . . full of characters with enormous doses of pluck, and a romance that finds itself again over a swinging bridge!

An Appalachian Summer is a gem of a book. I really enjoy Ann Gabhart's easy story telling style. Piper Danson agrees to a debut ball to please her parents. She's not so certain she will go along with her father's idea of marrying Braxton Crandall which would be more of a business transaction, even though he is a perfectly nice young man. Her father wants her to have a secure life and want for nothing, which Braxton with his family railroad business could provide. Piper still has Jamie Russell in mind, who she's known since they were children, but she hasn't heard from in months, since the financial crash and Mr. Russell's death. When her mother and Aunt Truda host a tea for Mary Breckinridge, Piper is challenged to become a courier on horseback for the summer for the Frontier Nursing Service in Hyden, Kentucky. She sees it as a chance to make a difference while putting the marriage question on hold for a few months. Every day in the Appalachian mountains brings new challenges for Piper. The couriers find a way to do what the nurse midwives ask, whether it is helping deliver a baby, milking a cow, or killing and cooking a chicken. Piper falls in love with the mountains and the people but has decisions to make a little sooner than she had expected when two men come calling. Truda has an adventure that summer as well. I wasn't ready for this book to end. I'd love to read a sequel. I highly recommend An Appalachian Summer to those who enjoy historical romance.
