Our story begins with the need for a sunscreen brand that caters exclusively to women of color.
From carrying expensive umbrellas to the beach to avoiding the sunshine altogether, women of color have come up with their own methods of protecting their skin. For years, sunscreen has been tailored to light-skinned individuals, leaving behind a visible white residue on our darker-skinned sisters. Blotchy makeup and white residue were enough to keep people from truly enjoying a beautiful sunny day. Our founder thought it was about time to change that.
In 2016, Shontay Lundy created Black Girl Sunscreen, a 30 SPF lotion infused with natural ingredients and formulated for women of color. Made with melanated skin in mind, BGS dries completely clear and protects melanin without the white cast.
Today, Black Girl Sunscreen is making moves! Black Girl Sunscreen has grown exponentially because of you. The goal of BGS is to start the conversation globally around sun safety to educate and protect melanin beauties worldwide. Now with four products, we’re saying Black does crack and it’s in our power to protect it.

Directions apply liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure, reapply: after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, immediately after towel drying, at least every 2 hours, Sun Protection Measures. Spending time in the sun increases your risk of skin cancer and early skin aging. To decrease this risk, regularly use a sunscreen with a Broad Spectrum SPF of 15 or higher and other sun protection measures including: limit time in the sun, especially from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, hats, and sunglasses, children under 6 months: Ask a doctor.Other information

Q: Can this be used for colored 11-year-olds with oily skin?
A: Homosalate is a chemical sunscreen and is recommended to be avoided by pregnant women and CHILDREN due to its harmful effects . SMH this has 15% homosalate. Do better.

It just means brown or dark olive complexion. She just wants to know if she can use this on her daughter.

A: I doubt it, it’s just a sunscreen, it doesn’t say anything about being a moisturizer on the bottle

Q: Is black girl sunscreen good for kids/adults with eczema? Has anyone with eczema ever used it? Thank you.
A: My daughter with eczema had a few bumps on the face after we used this, so do a patch test to be sure. It worked well for everyone else in the family so consider buying 2 brands of sunscreen

Q: How is this product reef safe as avobenzone is listed as an active ingredient & that's damaging to reefs? From nps.gov: Sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate & avobenzone, can harm reefs.

Q: Does this sunscreen sting the eyes? I have trouble finding a sunscreen that doesn’t sting my eyes
A: Hi Cindy, BGS Kids is not Tear-Free. However, we have not received any feedback indicating that is an issue. Hope this helps!
