Description

Black Girl Sunscreen for Kids is an everyday SPF 50 moisturizing sunscreen lotion for the face and body. Our FDA-approved sunscreen protects against harmful UVA/UVB rays and has eliminated all white residue. Soothes, moisturizes, protects, hydrates and heals your child's skin. Water resistant for 80 minutes. No fragrance. No Parabens. No silicones. No aluminum. Oxybenzone and octinoxate free means your child's broad spectrum sunscreen is environmentally friendly.

Our story begins with the need for a sunscreen brand that caters exclusively to women of color.

From carrying expensive umbrellas to the beach to avoiding the sunshine altogether, women of color have come up with their own methods of protecting their skin. For years, sunscreen has been tailored to light-skinned individuals, leaving behind a visible white residue on our darker-skinned sisters. Blotchy makeup and white residue were enough to keep people from truly enjoying a beautiful sunny day. Our founder thought it was about time to change that.

In 2016, Shontay Lundy created Black Girl Sunscreen, a 30 SPF lotion infused with natural ingredients and formulated for women of color. Made with melanated skin in mind, BGS dries completely clear and protects melanin without the white cast.

Today, Black Girl Sunscreen is making moves! Black Girl Sunscreen has grown exponentially because of you. The goal of BGS is to start the conversation globally around sun safety to educate and protect melanin beauties worldwide. Now with four products, we’re saying Black does crack and it’s in our power to protect it.

Q: Can this be used for colored 11-year-olds with oily skin?

submitted by Naula Isa - 5 years ago
  • A: Homosalate is a chemical sunscreen and is recommended to be avoided by pregnant women and CHILDREN due to its harmful effects . SMH this has 15% homosalate. Do better.

submitted byDo your Research - 1 year ago
  • A: We are unsure of what "colored 11-year-old" means. However, BGS Kids SPF 50 can be used on melaninated skin ages 6 months and older.

submitted byTeam BGS - 5 years ago
  • A: Guys, Naula Isa is a Spanish name. It's also common in South America. These countries never had Jim Crow. The term "colored" is not offensive as it is in America. It just means brown or dark olive complexion. She just wants to know if she can use this on her daughter.

submitted byTruthInAdvertising - 5 years ago
  • A: If you mean POC yes...colored should not be a word used to describe melaninated skin.

Q: Is this considered a moisturizer as well.

submitted by Cheryl - 1 year ago
  • A: I doubt it, it’s just a sunscreen, it doesn’t say anything about being a moisturizer on the bottle

  • A: Hi Cheryl! This formula does have a nice moisturizing effect. Thank you for your interest!

Q: Is black girl sunscreen good for kids/adults with eczema? Has anyone with eczema ever used it? Thank you.

submitted by Ymayancela - 1 year ago
  • A: My daughter with eczema had a few bumps on the face after we used this, so do a patch test to be sure. It worked well for everyone else in the family so consider buying 2 brands of sunscreen

  • A: Hi there! Yes, this product is hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive skin. Thank you.

Q: How is this product reef safe as avobenzone is listed as an active ingredient & that's damaging to reefs? From nps.gov: Sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate & avobenzone, can harm reefs.

submitted by targetshopher - 1 year ago
  • A: Hi there! Being free from both oxybenzone and octinoxate, Black Girl Sunscreen products are reef-safe, won’t damage coral reefs, and are environmentally aware products.

Q: Does this sunscreen sting the eyes? I have trouble finding a sunscreen that doesn’t sting my eyes

submitted by Cindy - 4 years ago
  • A: Hi Cindy, BGS Kids is not Tear-Free. However, we have not received any feedback indicating that is an issue. Hope this helps!

submitted byTeam BGS - 4 years ago
  • A: I find it does not sting my eyes unlike other water-resistant sunscreens, it stays where you rub it. I avoid my eyelids and bottom lash line.

My #1 daily skincare must have

My favorite sunscreen. Gentle enough to use on my face and neck daily with or without makeup. I love that it’s 50 spf, no white cast, residue or pilling even when used before applying other products. It also doesn’t burn my eyes like most sunscreens, and leaves my skin with a natural glow.

    Feels greasy

I was excited to try this sunscreen because it was recommended by a dermatologist and is a great price. I used the sunscreen on my face. I've used it 3 times now. I honestly don't think I'll be able to use it again. It feels so greasy on my face. It never feels like it absorbs into the skin. The sensation drives me crazy. I gave it 3 stars because maybe it'll work for someone else.

No white cast, no eye sting, blends well and reasonably priced. It does leave a subtle shine/“glow” not matte.

    Best American Sunscreen

This is actually my go to daily sunscreen. Unlike other water-resistant sunscreens, this one does not run into my eyes no matter what. Other water-resistant American-formulated sunscreens like SunBum, Neutrogena unfortunately have run into my eyes and caused severe burning, just with the natural oils of my skin causing those sunscreens to move there. This BGS stays put, rain, sweat, or just natural shine. Sure she is a tad greasy but I just omit moisturizer and I don’t wear any makeup during the day. Love her. She goes on thick and takes a little bit to melt into the skin. No white cast, no pulling. Once she’s good and rubbed in, she gives a good glow (which I’ve chosen to embrace) and stays put. Please don’t ever take her away or change her formula. She’s simply the very best and so easy to re-purchase whenever she runs out.

    It works

This doesn't leave a white cast but does make my face look pretty oily... and I already have oily skin. I ended up just using this on my body and I really like it for that. The value is really good and I might repurchase this just for using on my body.

    HG Sunscreen

I am an adult with Fitz type 2 skin. I found this at Target and figured I'd drop more money on a sunscreen that will probably break me out and burn my eyes. Nope! This stuff is absolutely amazing for my pale sensitive skin and eyes. This will be the ONLY sunscreen I buy in the future after many tries and fails. Thank you black girl sunscreen!!

Used To Be A Go To, But Now Smells Terrible

I used this sunscreen on my face daily in 2022/23 and loved it. Moisturizing but not greasy and dries down in the skin nicely. I switched to a different face sunscreen in 2024 but this year decided that the Black Girl Sunscreen felt better and wanted to go back to using it. I purchased it recently and it SMELLS rancid. I don’t remember it ever smelling, let alone smelling bad. I definitely wouldn’t have used it back then either if it smelled. I bought a second tube with a different lot number to be sure it wasn’t just a one off issue. The expiration dates were good too. The new tube also smelled terrible! So sad and not sure what changed in the formulation. They have grown a lot since I first started using them so maybe they’ve had to cut quality or adjust formulation for the production demand. I don’t know but I unfortunately can’t use this sunscreen anymore because the scent is so bad. Texture and finish of the product is still good but I can’t get past the smell

No greasy feel and no film.

It is really nice to have a sunblock that isn’t purple or white when you apply it. It dissolves immediately and really does prevent burn. You must reapply just like any other brand.

    Love quality

I loved it for my self and have been using the adult one for quite some time now, so I thought to take a try at the kids. I love that it goes on clear, no residue. Clean scent. No smear. It’s definitely my fave items to tackle moisture and sun blockage on baby girl and even my boys fave and arms though they are older.

    Hives on mixed baby skin

My son is Asian and Black. I wanted to love this product for my son because other sunscreens leave a white cast/film, but unfortunately it's not meant for his skin. We tried this when he was 7 or 8 months, and he had hives, but I thought it was because he was too young to have products on him. We tried again this past weekend (now 11 months) and at first it was fine. But later in the day it worsened. Hives all down his back and on his forehead. I would recommend a patch test before doing the whole body.
