Description
Our story begins with the need for a sunscreen brand that caters exclusively to women of color.
From carrying expensive umbrellas to the beach to avoiding the sunshine altogether, women of color have come up with their own methods of protecting their skin. For years, sunscreen has been tailored to light-skinned individuals, leaving behind a visible white residue on our darker-skinned sisters. Blotchy makeup and white residue were enough to keep people from truly enjoying a beautiful sunny day. Our founder thought it was about time to change that.
In 2016, Shontay Lundy created Black Girl Sunscreen, a 30 SPF lotion infused with natural ingredients and formulated for women of color. Made with melanated skin in mind, BGS dries completely clear and protects melanin without the white cast.
Today, Black Girl Sunscreen is making moves! Black Girl Sunscreen has grown exponentially because of you. The goal of BGS is to start the conversation globally around sun safety to educate and protect melanin beauties worldwide. Now with four products, we’re saying Black does crack and it’s in our power to protect it.

Q: Can this be used for colored 11-year-olds with oily skin?
A: Guys, Naula Isa is a Spanish name. It's also common in South America. These countries never had Jim Crow. The term "colored" is not offensive as it is in America. It just means brown or dark olive complexion. She just wants to know if she can use this on her daughter.
submitted byTruthInAdvertising - 3 years agoA: We are unsure of what "colored 11-year-old" means. However, BGS Kids SPF 50 can be used on melaninated skin ages 6 months and older.
submitted byTeam BGS - 3 years agoA: If you mean POC yes...colored should not be a word used to describe melaninated skin.

Q: Does this sunscreen work for combination skin?
A: Hello Omar! Yes, Each skin type is different. Our customers with sensitive skin tend to lean towards the Kids formula as it has more healing properties than the adult (for kids' delicate skin) such as chamomile and shea butter. BGS was also created with acne-prone skin in mind. Which is why we are toxin-free, paraben-free, and oxybenzone-free and we would recommend our Make It Matte formula. Hope this helps!
