Surprisingly good for Macro
I set it up on my R5 with some extension tubes and shot some macro with it, works great.

Great lens for the price.
I bought this lens years ago, but don't have the need to use it much. Reading reviews about poor focus at 300mm, I thought I would take a couple of shots. I shot this photo of a cedar fence at 20 ft at 300mm. I thought the IQ was very acceptable for this price lens.

Disappointed in this Lens
Of all the Canon products I have purchased (three camera bodies, five lenses, and a printer) this lens is the one product that has not lived up to my expectations. I found it nearly impossible to get a focused and stable shot. Every now and then it would produce a good shot but most were not acceptable. For the first year or so I thought it was a lack of skill on my part. I did not think it was a malfunctioning autofocus motor or image stabilization system. After two years of difficulty using the lens I took it to a camera shop and they checked it out. What they told me is that both the IS motor and Autofocus motors were not working or malfunctioning. As I reflect on it, I think those systems were never functioning adequately from the start. I had thought it was my inability to use this lens proficiently. It now seems more likely that it was a malfunctioning lens all along. Since then I have purchased a non-Canon brand long lens with which I am able to take terrific photos that I would have like to have captured with my original 70-300 mm lens. It now clear that my skill level was never the problem with my use of the 70-300mm lens. While my experience with this lens is not good, I have had great experiences with four other Canon lenses in my camera bag and my camera body is Canon. I will continue to buy Canon products. But cannot recommend this particular lens.

Exactly what I expected
This lens has fulfilled my expectations. Of course it will never get a bird on top of the tree, but for closer animals, for flowers, even insects, it's perfect. No need to have a tripod. The bokeh is absolutely beautiful. The autofocus is pretty fast.

Tack Sharp on my EOS 80D
This lens though for a full frame DSLR works great on an APSC sensor. It is Long when at full focal length.

Great lens...
Optically, on my 7D, this lens produces stellar performance. The Colors are true, the images are sharp, and the zoom range is exactly where it needs to be bring objects from far enough away right there.

A great lens for a budget minded wallet
I bought this refurbished lens for wild life and sports use. But before I could use it my brother took it out to take pictures of some eagles around his home. The lens is spot on, turning out some great shots. The lens was mounted on a Canon 80D. It's not an L lens but does a great job for half of the price.

You get what you pay for
I rented this lens for four days to test and compare versus the L and the new version of this when it comes out. I really wanted to like this lens - it's lightweight and relatively inexpensive. I found it difficult to get precise focus at moderate to long zoom lengths, the IS wasn't quite as supportive as I expected, corners remained too soft even at f16-22, and it was a little too slow to autofocus. Bottom line: I would try this lens first before buying as these may not be problems for you.

Great lens
I have owned this lens for a few years and you it on my 60 D and my 5D Mark III and love it to death. This lens is a must-have in your bag. If you're shooting a sporting event or spring flowers this lens gives you sharp clear images.

Good for the price
For the price, this lens is good. Has decent focus and a decent speed. For the price, the only thing I wish was available was that I could an extender with it. However, that is only available for the L lenses.

Good Value
I've had this lens for about a year now, and it has been one of my favorites. The biggest disadvantage I've faced is that this is not a fast lens at all. This is really noticeable on a telephoto lens. If you're taking photos indoors without excellent lighting, you're going to have to make some sacrifices. That said, with good lighting this lens is very sharp for the price. Even around 300mm I don't notice too much softness in photos. If you're looking for a lens that can perform well outdoors, this might be a good value for you. If you're working with limited light, I don't think I would recommend it.

Unfair review
I bought this lens last year and it's serving its purpose on my 7D. I have had NO issues with it and it's nice and sharp. For those who are able, micro focus the lens. I own many primes and this one works well with no issues.

Great Addition To My Camera Bag
I have been using a Canon 100 - 400mm "L" lens for several years and love it. The biggest issue I had with the 100 - 400mm lens was it's size and weight. A friend bought a 70 - 300mm lens and after looking at it I think it would fill a gap I had not being able to carry a long lens in my smaller camera bag. I'm pleased with the results of shooting with this lens as well as the ease of carrying it.

Great lens and price
When I purchased my 7D, I also picked this lens up for some wildlife and nature photography. With the cropped sensor, 300mm is close enough for animals that don't want to eat you... I'm impressed. Images are pretty sharp and colorful. The image stabilization works well, for the most part, and focus is usually spot on. The build quality is very nice, for a non-L. It's plastic, but it's solid plastic. The zoom ring feels nice and is just the right resistance. I was worried about lens creep, but I haven't experienced any with my lens. It's not perfect, of course... The focus is a tad slow for flying birds and the manual focus ring is somewhat loose and small. Over all, though, this is a lens I would have no problem recommending to most people.

Solid
I'm a photographer with a sports magazine. We cover high school sports, which means I run into a lot of less-than-ideal lighting. For state tournaments that are held in well-lit arenas, this lens performs just fine, and I've had a lot of success at outdoor events except when there is very little natural light (I shoot with a 7D). No complaints about the sharpness. I tend to get a little too much noise for my taste, but that's also a product of having a body that isn't as strong at higher ISO's as other bodies. Being on a tight budget and owning just one body, the biggest strength of this lens is its versatility. Shooting sports, I often don't have time to switch lenses, so being able to go from 300 to 70 mm on a turnover, etc., is a huge asset. I plan on getting better glass within a year (70-200), but this lens has delivered pretty solid bang for the buck. I'd recommend it to anyone who's looking to get started in sports photography.

Sharp. Great outdoor sports lens!
After initially considering 70-200 f4 non-IS, decided to give this bargain a shot. Look around and you can get this lens very very economically. This lens will perform extremely well on sunny outdoor scenes: kids playing soccer, windsurf, surf. Sharp under 210 and very sharp when stopped down to f/8 and up. You can't go wrong with this lens if shooting outdoors. This is performance-wise, along with the 50mm f1.8, the closest thing to an L lens on a budget.
