About this item

Description

ONLY @ TARGET! - Limited Edition with Journal and Prompts

Acclaimed musical artist Michelle Williams shares the intimate, never-before-told story of how, even in the midst of enormous fame and success, she battled depression, leading her to find her true calling as an advocate for mental health--especially her own.

As a member of Destiny's Child, one of the top female R&B groups of all time, Michelle Williams felt blessed. After the group disbanded, she continued to create bestselling albums, appear on television shows, and star in theater productions. Though she had always struggled with low moods, in 2018 her depression deepened, and when she found herself planning her own funeral, she checked herself into a treatment facility. There she found the help she needed to live out the incredible story God was writing for her life.

In her first book, Michelle courageously shares the hidden secrets that nearly ended her life; the importance of her faith, family, and friends; and the lessons she learned about prioritizing her mental health. She is on a quest to increase mental health awareness and urges others to understand the importance of "checking in" with themselves, God, and others. Her candid, often humorous, and incredibly brave book will inspire readers who desire hope for their own difficult times.

I highlighted all over this book. Michelle Williams book checking was written very well. You're definitely going to find yourself highlighting full paragraphs on almost every page. Michelle did not just drop some nuggets, she left you with something to get full off of and have long-lasting conversations about. I read her book twice. Most of the self-help books that I've read would drag a scenario on for hundreds of pages just to give you something that you could've Googled however, Michelle gives a more realistic approach to mental health by incorporating some of her own personal experiences that people can relate to. This was Michelle's "8 Mile" #Eminem mic drop moment. She addressed the critics, owned up to her mistakes, shared her embarrassing moments, and most of all let us know that she still learning and growing. Michelle's book checking in is by far the most relatable book I've ever read in my life. It almost felt like she was a distant cousin sending me this long text in physical book form saying "hey sis i'm checking on you." Let me tell you "how getting real about depression saved my life- and can save yours." I needed this book!! This is the true definition of the gift that keeps on giving. This book is going to bless so many lives the same way it did mine Thank you Michelle!!! ❤❤❤

Loved the book! Michelle is genuine, and it shines through in every chapter. I laughed, and I cried. Most importantly I grew. This book opened my eyes to the root cause of things that perpetuate unhealthy habits and thought processes. I struggled with self-sabotage and anxiety for a large portion of my life. Michelle provides some great strategies to help work through the tough times. I also loved the scriptural references throughout. She broke it all the way down, a few times! Honestly, I could go on and on! I am truly thankful for her openness. Baaaabbby! Many will be blessed by this book!

I loved every minute of reading “Checking In”. Originally Chapter 4 was my favorite until I got to Chapter 10 where Michelle not only is vulnerable and transparent but also incredibly encouraging! She speaks about “restoration vs reconciliation” and also forgiveness saying, “Being able to forgive others, ask for forgiveness, and forgive yourself is about you. It’s about checking in with your heart and not being tied to someone in a negative way.“ It is a MUST read! Those in book clubs will want this to be your next read as well! With the Target version there are small activities and journal entries for you to do at the end of the book, that allows you to “check in” with yourself!

I had a pleasure of receiving an advance copy of the book. What an on time book in a time where everyone is feeling overwhelmed with everything going on with the pandemic, life & more. I’m glad Michelle has spoken up on her struggle with depression. Something in that black community that’s not spoken about. Her honesty, humor and tips of how she got over will help anyone. She is very reliable and hold nothing back. Michelle thanks for being vulnerable and sharing a part of you so bravely. Buy this book for someone you need to check in with or you think need to check in with themselves, it will definitely bless and change both of your lives for the better.

Michelle Williams bares her soul in her debut book, Checking In. I’ve been a fan since she joined Destiny’s Child and I have appreciated the openness she has shown about her journey with mental health over the years. However, this book, Checking In, takes us even deeper into her mind and soul. She vulnerably shares the most intimate details about her journey, from childhood through adulthood. She walks us through the heights of her successes and happy times, yet doesn’t shy away from the depression and dark moments that led to her writing this book. You’ll be shocked when you finish the intro, to find out what happened to Michelle in July 2018 when she finally “checked in.” But, you’ll be grateful she did… and you’ll be grateful to her for sharing. Reading the book is like a conversation. It’s not a tell-all, it’s not her preaching at you about what you should do, but there are, of course, helpful insights to inspire you. Whether you read the book or listen to the audiobook (I’ve done both!) you’ll feel like she’s recanting the story to you, personally. If you’ve ever felt unsure of yourself, down and out but you couldn’t explain why, Michelle’s words in this book will inspire you to check in with yourself. But first, you’ve gotta check in with Michelle. So, get this book and get started.
