Therefore, its distribution is limited to the lush, dense tropical forest habitats of Africa where an abundance of food is readily available. Bongos are herbivores. Their main source of food at certain times of the year is bamboo. However, after flowering, a bamboo plant dies. During its second year of regrowth, it becomes poisonous. Ironically, bongos are unaware of the deadly changes that have taken place in the plant. As a result, bongos are frequently poisoned by the very plant on which they rely for subsistence. Although bongos can fall prey to leopards, it is by far continuous and large-scale hunting by humans that threaten these beautiful creatures the most.
