The civet family (Viverridae) includes binturongs, civet cats, falanoucs, fossas, genet cats, linsangs, mongooses and meerkats (which are actually a type of mongoose). They are related to the cat family, yet they are not actually cats. They do have a cat-like body, but with shorter legs and a longer tail. Their face resembles that of a weasel. One of the largest members of the civet family, the African civet measures 24 to 36 inches long, not including the 17 to 24 inch tail, and weighs 26 to 33 pounds. This solitary, ground-dwelling omnivore roams the forests and savannahs of central and southern Africa.
