Book Synopsis

Celebrate 50 years of America's favorite teddy bear with a brand-new, classically illustrated picture book by Academy Award winner Viola Davis.

When Lisa takes Corduroy to the theater for the very first time, it's so magnificent and exciting that he just can't help heading out on his own to explore. From the orchestra pit to the prop table to the dressing rooms, Corduroy sees it all. Could there be a place for Corduroy on stage, too?

Fifty years after this lovable, inquisitive teddy bear was first introduced to readers, he's now the star of the show. Author Viola Davis uses her own experience as an Emmy, Tony, and Oscar Award-winning actress to imbue Corduroy's adventure with all the magic of the stage. A beautifully illustrated tale with a classic feel, Corduroy Takes a Bow is sure to spark an interest in theater in children of any age.

Review Quotes

Perhaps the book's most valuable visual aspect is featuring people of color in all elements of the theater, from Lisa and her mother, of course, to the orchestra pit, stage manager, and actors . . . A sweet story that will have children clamoring to see a show, perhaps with their own bears.
-Kirkus Reviews

A delightful new act for ever-curious Corduroy--and an entertaining introduction to the theater.

Modern attempt on a classic but story doesn't flow and illustrations are a bit off.

My toddler (2) loves the original Freeman classic and we've read it countless times since he was 1. It's a favorite that he will choose over and over again. Personally, I stay away from adaptations but this story taking place in a theater was appealing and a way to introduce the concept to a very curious toddler. First off, the illustrations are simply off and doesn't have the same visual magic as the Freeman classic. Something about the muted colors and blurring of the background that made Freeman's original work so much more captivating. Each page made your eyes focus on the story at hand and yet left more for your imagination to fill in. Honestly, "Takes a Bow" pictures are a poor rehash of his artwork -- the brushwork sloppy. And the story just doesn't flow well. I like that Davis tries to break down the theater concept for littles but it gets too wordy. Sentences don't flow well. It feels like someone is trying to hard to tie everything together. Despite this parent's dislike of the poor remake, ultimately, I gave it 4 stars because my kid always requests this book. Loves that Cordoroy gets lost at the theater and ends up on stage. Loves pointing out all the nursery rhyme characters. So I just have to rephrase and trim some of the story as all parents do.

Came in perfect condition. My 4 year old received this as part of her birthday gift. She did mention that Corduroy, Lisa & her mom look a little different, I just thought it was a cute observation! She loves Corduroy and enjoys this story!
