Q: Is this coffee organic? Target’s ’product details’ section says it is organic. However, the company’s website does not say it is organic. If this coffee is not organic, why is Target advertising it as organic?

Not it
Reviews must be older as purchasing this in 2025 gets you a sour/acidic coffee no matter the ratios or brew times.

What happened to the flagship roast??
What happened counter culture? This coffee used to be a beautiful work of art. Low acidity in a city/full city roast! But after taking 2 years off and purchasing it again in 2025, I’m sorely disappointed. Way too acidic and sour in an espresso, even after extending my brew ratios and grind size to minimize. I fell in love with this brand while living in Durham. I even went so far as to make a birth announcement with “big trouble” as the theme. My little family used to live breathe and eat this blend. So, please share this with your purchasers and master roasters. What on earth changed? We want the miracle roast back. In the meantime, I’m taking my business to other local shops, and big brands like Stumptown.

Big Disappointment
The package says medium dark roast. It is not. It’s more on the light side of medium when compared to most specialty coffees. The flavor is bright, acidic and a little sour. No caramel or nuttiness that I could detect. Not good and definitely not in line with what is advertised on the packaging and website. I bought a 24 oz bag and feel ripped off.

Ol' Faithful
Despite being someone who has a fear of getting into trouble (except in certain contexts)... I've been buying Big Trouble almost exclusively since I moved to the Durham area in 2021 (thank dog it was on sale at Weaver Street which got me to try it) and I've never looked back! Like another reviewer said- I've drank many gallons at this point and I can say it's delicious, consistent, bright without being too acidic, nutty and round with a dash of citrus. I usually lean towards classic Columbian arabicas and this falls into that taste profile IMO. I have no idea why they put it on the medium/dark side of the spectrum, it's definitely not dark- a TRUE medium. The beans are always a beautifully matte finish. Everyone that cares about coffee that I've shared this with is an instant fan. Thanks Counter Culture!!! Stay gold. Made with a 1960s chemex pourover (thanks grandma) OR the oxo 9-cup rainwater showerhead drip (which has a "bloom" feature!!!!!), ground with the oxo burr grinder just before brewing.

Terrible Tasting Coffee
This is a nasty bitter tasting coffee that was not properly marked as a light roast even though it's listed as a medium roast. Save your morning and your money by buying from a different company.

Beware of which coffee grinder you use for the whole beans. It broke my very expensive coffee grinder.

I have a super-automatic espresso machine that brews everything . I use it70% of the time for cappuccino , 20% “regular coffee” and 10% espresso. I have tried over 2 dozen whole bean blends/single origins. Big Trouble is one of the two best.
One of my two “go tos”. I prefer traditional espresso flavors.

Great coffee blend
Great coffee blend, a nutty balanced coffee with a nice acidity. No bitter aftertaste in the finish, slight sweetness, definitely a crowd pleaser

Great flavor-Check the roast date!!
Love this coffee, I prefer a bright lighter roast in my coffee. I serve this to guests, and they all exclaim how much they like it. I make it strong for my dark roast friends. The problem I have with it is that it's not always the freshest batch available on a Target shelf. Make sure to check the roast date. Some folks complained about this coffee in other reviews. I'm wondering if it just isn't their flavor profile or it wasnt a fresh roast and had been sitting on a target shelf for 4 months!

Better options out there
Coffee isn’t bad and it was worth a try. I would buy them again except the packaging ripped in half on me and all the coffee beans ended up on the counter/floor. So I had to throw a large amount away. Horrible packaging and okay coffee. Wouldn’t recommend unless it’s your last option or on a good sale.

Not quite there
Not bad, but not quite what I was looking for. I like the dark beans that are somewhat 'oily' to touch and the dark choclate flavor. This did not have much aroma, not that deep richness flavor I like, based on how I prefer Sumatra Mandeling beans. I just didn't get too excited bout this one. I guess I prefer single-origin from Sumatra or Kenya better.

This coffee is not good. I do not recommend. The beans don’t even look as good as the normal brand I buy. Super dry.

Found Counter Culture while attending Duke Divinity, lived in Cary, NC. Still enjoying now from SATX!
What a great coffee! I often brew up for my senior Leaders and junior Sailors as a Chaplain. Counter Culture has become a National brand but retained its quality and freshness. The taste is delicious , smooth and full.
