Cet ouvrage constitue l'un des plus éminents dictionnaires différentiels traitant des variétés de français hors de France. Il s'appuie sur le matériel contenu dans le Dictionary of Louisiana French (2010) en fournissant une étude approfondie de l'histoire et de l'étymologie des lexèmes du français de Louisiane qui diffèrent du français de référence par leur forme ou leur sens.

Pour chacune des 634 entrées individuelles, les rédacteurs ont consulté les diverses sources traitant des autres variétés nord-américaines du français (laurentienne, acadienne, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, le Missouri, la Nouvelle-Angleterre), de celle de l'îlot de Saint-Barthélemy, des parlers dialectaux de France, ainsi que des créoles de la zone atlantique et de l'océan Indien, afin de déterminer leur origine et leur parcours.

Cette approche historique et comparée jette un nouvel éclairage sur la richesse de la culture et de l'histoire de la Louisiane francophone et contribue à une meilleure compréhension de la place du français de Louisiane au sein du monde francophone.
