About the Book

This Newbery Medalist makes her debut as an illustrator in a warm, whimsical picture book about the wonderful place where all good dogs go for an endless supply of ham biscuits, good meals and lots of petting.

Book Synopsis

A comforting and playful exploration of a beloved dog's journey after a happy life on Earth.

In Newbery Medalist Cynthia Rylant's classic bestseller, the author comforts readers young and old who have lost a dog, as she did for cats in the bestselling companion book, CAT HEAVEN. Recommended highly by pet lovers around the world, DOG HEAVEN not only comforts but also brings a tear to anyone who is devoted to a pet. From expansive fields where dogs can run and run to delicious biscuits no dog can resist, Rylant paints a warm and affectionate picture of the ideal place God would, of course, create for man's best friend. The first picture book illustrated by the author, Dog Heaven is enhanced by Rylant's bright, bold paintings that perfectly capture an afterlife sure to bring solace to anyone who is grieving.

Review Quotes

Pure, tender, lyrical without being overearnest, and deeply felt. - Kirkus - pointer reviewThe reassuring story might comfort a child after the loss of a pet, but this pleasant, imaginary paradise will have a broader appeal to all animal lovers. - SLJThe bright acrylic paintings are Rylant's debut as a picture-book painter... they mesh beautifully with the innocence of the text... a book for parent-child sharing. - Booklist

  • A: There is No age range for this book. I am an adult, and my dog's Oncologist sent this to us when our dog passed away. The staff wrote their memories of my dog on the blank pages. Best gift ever !

Such a beautiful book. Let alone the artwork but the story really helped our daughter after our dog passed. I'm glad I bought this book. I highly suggest this book if you've lost your dog.

As soon as my dog was given days to live, my husband bought this book for our kids. The night our sweet Babygirl passed, we read the book to our kids. It helped them understand that she was in a better place now. Love how book explained heaven to our kids especially when I was hurting so much.

Given this book after losing my first dog 17 years ago and just purchased it for my friend who just lost their sweet boy. Thought it’d be a good way for her to help her little kids grieve the loss of their pup.

Cynthia Rylant's book Dog Heaven was written to explain what happens to dogs after they die. This book gives us hope that our beloved pets will go on to enjoy life in Heaven like we hope that they will. I recommend that anyone grieving the loss of a dog read this book.
