Q: Is it safe for babies with eczema?
A: Thank you for contacting Dr. Bronner's! We greatly appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns with us as we take the health and safety of our customers very seriously. While we do not make any products specifically for sensitive skin, many of our soaps work very well for those with skin sensitivities. Here is a list of our soaps from least to most moisturizing: Pure-Castile Liquid, Pure-Castile Bar, and Organic Sugar Soap. We have received very positive comments regarding our Baby Unscented and Tea Tree soaps from our customers with skin issues such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, acne, oily skin, or general skin sensitivities. However, we all have different skin, so we would advise first trying our product on a small area of your babies skin to be sure that it will work for them. Rest assured, our products have been tested and deemed safe in toxicological assessments, below the safety limits suggested by the governing authorities. However, please note that all fragrance oils are composed of constituents that may cause skin irritation for some, particularly in sensitive areas. With that in mind, rest assured that our Baby Unscented Pure-Castile Liquid Soap, or any of our milder scents such as Almond or Lavender, are great for young children and kids! When taking a bath, add a capful of soap into the bath water and let them soak. When bathing babies, we recommend using our Baby Unscented Pure-Castile Liquid Soap as it contains no essential oils and almost double the olive oil, making it perfect for washing your child's face, body, and hair. Just add a few drops (2 – 3) to a damp washcloth to easily maintain control of the soap as no true soap is tear-free, so it's important to keep soap out of the eyes. The “tear-free" characteristic can only be achieved with synthetic non-soap detergents and is not something we're able to do given the all-natural formulation of our soaps. To read more about bathing babies with our Pure-Castile Soap, head over to Lisa Bronner's blog post, Using Castile Baby Mild Soap on Babies (https://www.lisabronner.com/using-castile-baby-mild-soap-on-babies/). Should you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us!

Q: Is this soap anti bacterial?
A: Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Bronner's! Soap that is labeled “antibacterial” means that active antimicrobial ingredients have been added to it. At this time, none of our soaps or cleaning products contain these specific ingredients; therefore, we do not label them as “antibacterial.” However, the US Food and Drug Administration published a report indicating that soap and water are just as effective at mechanically removing microbes as antibacterial soap is at killing microbes. Also, keep in mind that antibacterial soap can also kill good microbes along with the bad, often containing known toxins such as triclosan. For these reasons, we believe our soap is safer and more effective than an antibacterial agent, even though it is not labeled as such. For more information on this topic, we encourage you to check out Lisa Bronner’s blog post Ditch the Antibacterial: Soap Is All You Need (https://www.lisabronner.com/ditch-the-antibacterial-soap-is-all-you-need/). Should you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let us know!

Q: Hello, I’ve read positive reviews about this soap, but since I’m in the U.S. Army and subject to drug testing, I’m wondering if it could impact my test results.
A: Hi, thank you for reaching out to us! While there can be minute traces of THC (Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) found in our products, rest assured that none of our products, including our soaps, can make you test positive for a drug test. Here is some data to back this up. A desktop study conducted in 2001 for Dr. Bronner's and other hemp product companies, funded by the Agri-Food Research and Development Initiative of the Canadian provincial government in Manitoba, determined that during typical daily use of cosmetics containing hemp seed oil on healthy skin, THC uptake was less than 1 μg (microgram). Even assuming the inadvertent and complete ingestion of applied lip balm (applied to lips 5 times/day at 0.015 g/application = 0.075 g total), the uptake was less than 1 μg/day. By comparison, the minimum THC dose required to produce a positive urine test for marijuana is 500 μg/day, or more than 500 times that quantity. A typical minimum THC dose required to achieve a high in recreational use ranges from 1 to 10 mg/day, i.e., no less than 1,000 times the amount present in applied lip balm during daily intended use. Although this study focuses on our balm as it has a higher chance of being ingested, it suggests that any potential THC uptake due to the use of Dr. Bronner's products is far too low to cause psychotropic effects or a positive drug test. Additionally, Dr. Bronner's has signed the Test Pledge, which means that we comply with specifically required limits for the presence of THC in the hemp oil that we use. Here is a quote from this pledge that we feel summarizes it best: "No significant transdermal absorption of THC would occur even in a worst-case scenario of highly compromised skin, full-body application of hemp oil, and 10 ppm THC in the hemp oil (the maximum limit allowed by Canadian law). THC absorption from body care products is extremely inefficient and is non-significant as an additive factor alongside hemp food consumption even from unrealistically extensive use of these body care products. Thus, Test Pledge requires that hemp body care companies signing the Test Pledge observe the current Canadian 10 ppm limit for THC." Lastly, we use less than 3% of organic hemp seed oil in our product formulations, which is a very small amount. As mentioned above, if there were trace amounts of CBD or THC, they would be extremely minute to the point that they are practically almost non-existent. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Q: Can this safely be used to clean a menstrual cup, such as the diva cup or Saalt cup?
A: Hi, thank you for reaching out to us! The care instructions for silicone molds and even menstrual cups typically state that an unscented liquid soap, like our Baby Unscented Pure-Castile Liquid Soap is safe for cleaning as it should not damage the silicone over time. The main concern is any residual oils that can be left on the silicone, potentially causing degradation. Rest assured that during saponification (the soap-making process) all oil used in our Liquid Soaps is converted into soap, and no free oil is left within the product. However, we would like to note that bacteria can grow on silicone when left wet for long periods so make sure to dry any items completely after washing them. Additionally, silicone can readily absorb fragrances so be aware if you chose to use one of our scented Liquid Soaps. Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach back out to us!

Q: Is this safe to use in a power washer to clean rocks and hard surfaces in the landscape without harming nearby plants?
A: Thank you for contacting Dr. Bronner's! Our Pure-Castile Soaps were the original camping soap as they have always been safe to use in and around nature. Currently, our Pure-Castile Liquid Soaps, Pure-Castile Bar Soaps, Sal Suds Biodegradable Cleaner, Organic Hair Crème, and Organic Sugar Soaps have all been tested and all meet the standard criteria to be classified as “readily biodegradable.” In the lab, this means these products demonstrated more than 60% biodegradation after 28 days. These criteria are so strict that it is reasonable to assume that these products would completely biodegrade within two months in aerobic settings with minimal impact on the environment. Our soaps should be safe to be disposed of on lawns and or in plants, as small amounts of well-diluted soap will not hurt plants, and soapy water is better than no water for plants during a drought. However, it must be applied according to certain guidelines to prevent damage to the plants. We encourage avoiding contact with edible portions of a plant. Avoid pouring soapy water directly at the base of a plant because it may cause root and stem rot. Instead, pour the soapy water evenly into the soil around the perimeter of each plant. For trees or shrubs, apply soapy water along a drip line. A drip line is an imaginary line, or circle, on the ground that marks where water drips from a plant’s outermost branches. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let us know!

Q: What is the typical shelf life?
A: Hi, thank you for reaching out to Dr. Bronner's! In general, we recommend using Dr. Bronner’s body care products within three years of the manufacture date. Soaps are self-preserving, but because our products are readily biodegradable, it’s best to not leave them on the shelf for too long. Also, the soaps are good for 24 months after opening the product, within that 3-year window. To find out when our personal care products were manufactured, you can consult the “lot code,” a number that appears printed or etched on the packaging, typically just below the label. We do not use expiration dates, instead we use Julian dates. The first digits refer to the year (i.e., “17” is 2017, “20” is 2020, etc.), while the next three digits refer to the day of the year out of 365 total days. So, if the first five digits of a lot code are “17165,” the product was manufactured in 2017 on the 165th day of that year (June 14th). You can always search for a Julian date calendar for the specific year that your bottle was manufactured in online.

Q: Can I use this to clean VEGAN leather seats in my car? What would be the dilution?
A: Hi, thank you for your interest in Dr. Bronner's! While both our Pure-Castile Liquid Soap and Sal Suds Biodegradable Cleaner can work very well to clean leather car interiors, it is important to reach out to the manufacturer in the case that there is a special cleaner for this surface. Rest assured that if the finish manufacturer calls for a mild cleaner, both all-purpose sprays fit the bill. If you have a surface that is unusual, spot-testing is always a good idea. While Castile Soap is a great cleaner, Sal Suds is great for spot-treating carpets and for cleaning leather and microfiber furniture. It’s also great on cars and for degreasing engines. Depending on what you have on hand, either the Sal Suds All-Purpose Spray (1 Tbsp. in a quart of water) or the Castile All-Purpose Spray (¼ c. in a quart of water) will do a quick clean. If the leather needs to be nourished, you may want to consider a leather polish made from ⅓ c. vinegar with ⅔ c. olive oil and ½ tsp. pure essential lemon oil. Shake this up and rub it on with a soft rag. We do want to mention that if you are using our Pure-Castile Soap and have hard water, it is possible to encounter some mineral build-up. Rest assured that this is completely normal as the interaction of hard water, and even soft water, with any true soap (not synthetic detergent-based soaps), can leave behind a thin film of minerals that appears as residue or “soap scum. Please note that our products are not specifically formulated for interior car cleaning, and we have not tested them for all types of fabrics, including vegan leather. Our Organic Hand and Body Lotion, Organic Hair Crème, and Organic Hand Sanitizer are the only products we currently manufacture that contain alcohol as an ingredient. Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Q: What is the Ph of this soap?
A: Thank you for your interest in our Baby Unscented Pure-Castile Soap! Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Liquid soap falls within the pH range of 8.7 - 9.9. It is important to note that Dr. Bronner’s does not purposefully alternate or fluctuate the pH of our soap, and we do not add any synthetic preservatives. Instead, the highly concentrated nature of our soap keeps the product stable over time. Though this is not considered to be ‘pH balanced’, there is a bit of debate about if pH-balanced soap is necessary. We encourage you to read more about this topic in Lisa Bronner’s blog post Skin Health, pH, and Dr. Bronner’s Soap. https://www.lisabronner.com/skin-health-ph-and-dr-bronners-soap/ Lastly, should you have any health concerns when considering the pH of your soap, we always recommend that you consult with your dermatologist or physician just to be on the safe side.

Q: Is this safe to wash your private parts as well since it contains tea tree oil?
A: Our Castile Soap works as a great body wash, and some also use this soap to wash around their feminine or masculine areas. Please keep in mind that this soap was not specifically made for these delicate areas, however we get positive feedback that it works just fine. As we are all different and some may be more sensitive down there than others, we recommend that you do a spot test first and using the Baby Unscented Castile Soap. For sensitive skin and sensitive areas of the body, we always suggest our Baby Unscented Castile Soap. The Peppermint soap for example, may be a bit strong for the area, as it will really tingle from the Peppermint Oil. If you are still unsure or have unique sensitivities, consult with your preferred medical professional to determine which product is right for you.
