Bought by my wife's Grandma, my son actually loves it. Usually he hates the "Nanny" schoolwork over the summer, but he actually wanted to do more after she left. Just beginning use, but very impressed so far. Will definitely look into purchasing more.

I have found that these are a Great help over the summer so so skills aren't lost or a great jumpstart to the next years math. Also when having a little trouble understanding this are wonderful with its 2 books of interactive lessons makes learning a fun experience instead of a chore. With the hotdots it makes it seem more like a game.

**I was sent a copy for free in exchange for my honest review. This set includes two durable books with two math problems on each page, and an interactive "pen" that lets you know if your multiple choice answer is correct. We found this set to be as educational as our other hot dots set and over-all is a nice set. We did find, however, that my son needed a pen and paper to figure out many of the answers and so it went very slowly and he quickly got bored. Also, if you do not place the pen exactly upright on the dot, it can give you an incorrect response. Some adult supervision was necessary. The immediate feedback and positive reinforcement of the correct answer is a major plus as to why hot dots are so wonderful. Overall, I recommend this set.

My child is very proficient in Math but found this toy to be quite boring. The Hot Dots pens seem to be compatible with other other EI toys so it would be great if they would be sold separately. I do not need multiplexes of the same pen.

Hi McMom Good news! You can just purchase our Hot Dots Talking Pen as well as other card sets separately. This set just happens to be one where we included a variety of lessons into a workbook. Hopefully you'll take a look at this next time you are looking for additional Hot Dots products.

My 2nd grader is fairly advanced at math so I thought she wouldn't find this challenging but she really liked it. She said that all the problems were easy for her but she still enjoyed it. For the students who are at the top of their class, I would suggest buying "one grade up" so the student is challenged. It's good review for her and another medium besides online math games and workbooks.

I was given this kit to use and review. My students always love to use hot dots pens so that caught their attention first. Since many of my younger students are not great readers these were an activity we did together. There were two books and a total of 85+ questions that dealt with time, money, fractions, addition, etc. I see these books as a good way to practice skills that have already been taught in a longer lesson. It could also be used for introducing a concept.

My daughter is in 1st grade, but we got her the 2nd grade Let's Master Math set because she's already 7-1/2. My daughter isn't fond of math, but see enjoyed using Hot Dots as an alternative change to all of the boring worksheets she does in school. Some of the topics/skills she hasn't learned in school yet (I assume she will in 2nd grade), but she was able to grasp them after I explained it to her once, and then she worked through the problems independently. She was engaged by some of the funny word problems, like Pete ZaPie who entered the town pizza-eating contest, but she ended up getting bored after awhile and we had to put it away. We will probably do a little at a time.

I received this product for free to review. My 1st grader enjoys playing with this on her own. She will sometimes just play to hear the different sound effects the pen will make, but she also will try and learn as well. Some of the math is a little bit more of a challenge for her, so this one she occasionally needs help with. I do wish it had come with batteries.

The set came with 2 books and a pen. All the items seem sturdy; the pen dropped on the floor and worked fine afterwards. The books are wire-bound coated plastic and the pages are laminated to stand up to kids! My daughter is in 1st grade so we needed to work directly with her on these books. The packaging was nice and seems able to hold up for storage.

**I was sent a copy for free in exchange for my honest review. The Hot Dots Let's Master Grade 2 Reading set is fun for my kids to play with. In this set, you receive two spiral bound books and a Hot Dots pen. The Hot Dots pen allows the child to instantly know if the answer he chose is correct. If you are correct, the pen will light up green and say a congratulatory phrase. If you are wrong, it will light up red and say that you were wrong. There is a volume control on the pen, and it even allows you to turn the sound off. With the sound off, this makes a great quiet activity. The books are 50 pages each. The pages are durable. Included in the books are the following skills: place value, numbers, even numbers, odd numbers, patterns, math vocabulary, addition facts, subtraction facts, length, telling time, data and statistics, geometry, number sentences, algebra, addition, addition and subtraction, shapes, measuring time, counting money, and a number of challenge problems. I love that the skills are mixed up in the books and they are all color coded so if you want to focus on just one skill it is easy to find. Overall, I think this is a great set. It seems to be right on track for 2nd grade. My daughter is in first grade. While she can do some of the problems in these books, much of it is skills she has not learned yet.

A fun concept, but questions are too easy for grade level

My first-grade son received this. It comes in a box with a handle for easy transport and storage. Inside are two fifty-page, spiral-bound, laminated books of math problems and the Hot Dots pen. Each page contains two questions. There are 85 pages of regular questions and 15 pages of more advanced ones. Topics covered are counting/numbers, patterns, time, shapes/geometry, fractions, measurement, math facts, money, place value, and algebra. Most of the questions are word problems. Two AAA batteries required for the pen aren't included. The pen is interchangeable and can be used with other Hot Dots books. Children read the questions and use the pen to choose their answer. If the answer is correct, it lights up green and makes positive sounds, if it's wrong, it lights up red and makes negative sounds. One button on the pen is used to select the type of sounds. You can choose speech, sound effects, or a combination. The second button changes the volume level to low, high, or mute. My son really liked the concept of Hot Dots. However, he found even most of the advanced questions to be too easy. He said that these topics were covered in first grade, and it shouldn't be rated for second-grade use. A problem he had with the pen was that if you don't hold it straight up and down and put it in the center of the dot, it sometimes told him he was wrong, even though he answered correctly. This was frustrating to him. Overall, I like the concept of this product. It makes learning fun, and kids can do this independently. Parents don't have to hound their children with flash cards. This can be used while traveling or waiting for an appointment with the sound muted. However, I feel this is not at a second-grade level, which is why I only gave it three stars. If your child is testing at grade level or higher, I would order this product at least one or two years above their current grade. EI sent me this product in exchange for an honest review.

We are a Hot Dots loving family. Have used Hot Dots since kinder and they've been a helpful tool to reinforce what is learned in school. I have found that Hot Dots grade ____ is aligned with that grade levels curriculum and Hot Dots Math Grade 2 is no exception. Hot Dots Let's Master Grade 2 Math comes with 2 workbooks - Grade 2 Book 1 and Grade 2 Book 2. Book one starts with place value, odd/even numbers, time, etc. The end of book 2 includes data and statistics (age appropriate), money, and a few pages of "challenge" problems. There is reading involved for a number of word problems throughout both books. This Hot Dots kit also includes an interactive talking pen that light up - green for the correct answer, red for the wrong answer. The talking features include phrases like, "way to go", "nice try", "oops", "perfect" "that's brilliant", and more. A one touch button allows you to turn sound off, low, or high. The pen uses 2 AAA batteries which are not included. I have also found the Hot Dots pens are interchangeable, so if for whatever reason you don't have the pen from this kit, you can use an interactive Hot Dots pen from another kit. Hot Dots workbooks and Pens and are also great for travel. The books are slim enough to throw in a bag or backpack without taking any space.

My kids were all recently gifted Hot Dots Sets for reading and math for all three of them. So far, these sets have provided hours of fun and engaging learning experiences for my kids, and a ton of quite time for me. Since the magic battery operated pens that selects the dots is not an actual pen, my kitchen table has stayed clean! The magic pens requires two AAA batteries so I suggest buying quality batteries if your child will be using this a lot. The lessons are premade but there are tons of them that mix things up. My kids have not finished the entire set yet because they have only been mastering two lessons per day. I love Hot Dots, and would recommend them to all! Plus, they are very cheap..like $20 for a great learning resource!

My 6 y.o. has enjoyed working on math with his new Hot Dots Grade 2 Math set. The stylus is easy for him to use and provides immediate feedback on how he is doing through the use of phrases, sounds, and lights. The following topics are covered in the two included booklets: Place Value, Numbers (expanded form practice, even vs odd), Patterns, Math Vocabulary (addend, difference, sum, fact family), Addition/Subtraction Facts, Length, Telling Time, Data & Statistics (graphs, charts), Geometry (shapes), Number Sentences, Algebra, Story Problems, Counting Money, Fractions, as well as a Challenge section that is a review of all the child has worked on in the two books. Whether at home or on the road, this is a good way for kids to pass a bit of time while learning something in the process.

Let's face it, 2nd grade was a long time ago for me and I can't exactly remember what I was learning. Having Hot Dots refresh my memory on what kinds of things my son will be learning helps me know what to work on with him in daily life as well as in the Hot Dots Math book, like money and measuring. Problems in the book build on each other, getting harder as you go further in the book. This is nice because my son can't just sit down and complete the whole book the first time. He has to work to master each section before he can move on the the next. I like that with the help of the talking pen he can either do it by himself at home or on the go or I can sit down and go through things with him. This is a great activity to keep him occupied while at the "boring store". Learning in a fun way is a great way to encourage continued learning outside of school. Hot Dots are great for kids!!

Great for 2nd Grade Math Practice

So I have to admit that getting the grade 2 Math box did not make my oldest as happy as the Preschooler who got the princess box. It is, after all, a school toy. No fooling her :). Inside a sturdy box was a Hot Dot pen and two spiral bound math books for Grade 2. You will need 2 AAA batteries for the pen; they aren't included. The books are sturdy for repeated use & feel like laminated cardstock. The books cover counting, place value, time, geometry, fractions, measurement, math facts, money, and algebra concepts. We have just begun second grade math and there were items that she had not yet covered but were in her math curriculum. I did like that there were vocabulary words we had not heard previously like expanded form. I also liked the challenge section at the end of book two which made the child think about using more than one step to solve problems. Because most of the books 100 problems are story problems, they should be a proficient reader. It's a great tool for assessing where a student is proficient or where they may need more practice. You do need to sit near because I the pen is not fully in the circle, it will not register properly. My 4 year old has an issue with this but my 6-3/4 year old only does when she's being sloppy or just wants to hear it talk and so picks every answer. If they need extra practice but drill & kill is making them nuts, this is a good alternative. Or if they like math & are adept at figuring things out on their own, try getting a set or two at a higher level and see what happens. Like the others, you can add any Hot Dot/Hot Dot Jr book or card set & the pen will work with them. I would highly recommend this Hot Dots set! Disclaimer: I received this item from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
