Book Synopsis

Enthusiasm, first published in 1950 by Ronald A. Knox, is the end product of thirty years of research and inspiration. In his perceptive and learned study Knox presents the personalities and religious philosophies of the various types of enthusiasts of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: the monatists; donatists; anabaptists; Quakers; Jansenism; quietism; methodism; and other movements.

Review Quotes

"For those who have been wishing they could get their hands on a different kind of Church history, Ronald Knox wrote one. Enthusiasm... [is] remarkably informative and helpful for those classical Protestants who want to reassert the objectivity of the covenant and the importance of the historical church." --Credenda/Agenda

"His story is concerned with personalities rather than movements. [I]t should have a wide appeal." --Commonweal

"Knox brings all his wit and scholarship to bear on the many groups in church history which have from time to time bypassed ecclesiastical authority to claim direct contact with the divine." --Time

"One of the great works of the pre-Vatican II Period. An extraordinary stylist and brilliant thinker, Ronald Knox continues to challenge us, even in a wholly new era of the Church's history." --Rev. Richard P. McBrien, author of Catholicism

"The remarkable feature is the charity [Knox] brings to all his judgments. The chapter on Wesley might have been written by a candid but deeply admiring follower, and that on the Jansenists is a really beautiful piece of work." --Manchester Guardian
