Fire Emblem Engage makes me understand why people love Fire Emblem

I’ve never been much of a fire emblem guy, most of my knowledge of the series came from (like most people) super smash bros and some one off facts I found out about here and there. However, I could tell it had a longed storied history, so it was a series I respected and meant to get into one day. On a whim, I decided to pick up engage because unlike most other people, I actually really did like how the characters looked, and oh my god was it a great idea that I did. I’ve been having so much fun with the game. I love the characters, I love the battles, I love just walking around in the somniel, it’s just so much fun. One of the main negatives is the story, it’s very simple and almost all of it was predictable, but its pretty obvious the story wasn’t the main focus. Plus, there were even some twists I didn’t expect. If your going in expecting “Three Houses 2” you’ll probably come out more disappointed, but as someone who didn’t really click with three houses all that much, I didn’t have a problem with it. Also I just want to say, this game is so SO gorgeous and is leagues above how three houses visually looked (seriously intelligent systems, what happened in the visual department for three houses). If your afraid of this being too hard, don’t fret, the game is very beginner friendly. It introduces new mechanics and things to do at a pace where you don’t feel bombarded and overwhelmed. Overall this is a great game that’s a love letter to long time fans, and a great way to get into the series, and I can’t wait to see what intelligent systems has in store for this series future.

If you enjoyed Fire Emblem Awakening, you'll enjoy Engage. The plot begins very similarly and this game continues the changes made to the series since Awakening. Engage offers a wide variety of customizations to each unit allowing you to do a "build" with different skills, emblems, and class customization. As always the story has its ups and downs, twists, comic relief moments, and diverse cast of characters. I have not completed the game yet at the time of writing this review, but I suspect I am over half way through. If the game finishes strong it will definitely be one of my favorite Fire Emblem games.

Much more focused on battles than the social sim from Three houses. Story could be better but the battling mechanics as well as the map designs have improved.

As a hardcore fire emblem fan I’m severely disappointed with this. Better off just playing 3 houses again. It’s just a bunch of cringey wifus

It’s a good entry in the series for sure but not one of the best. Brings back the weapon triangle and introduces new mechanics that give the classic style new breath, however story is one of the weakest in a while

This game is a fantastic, colorful and overall super fun celebration of the long running fire emblem franchise! At first I thought the past Emblems might be too overpowered and make strategy too easy but fortunately they are balanced quite well. While I believe the story is lacking compared to other installments in the franchise the characters are world are just so much fun to interact with. This is a game that I just love to sit back relax and enjoy, it’s very much the opposite of last installment Three Houses which could feel like a slog to get through with monastery segments that were mandatory and very tedious. So overall Engage is already one of my favorite Fire Emblem games due to its unique characters and great celebration of a series I think is neat!

Graphics are a big improvement coming from 3 Houses. Cutscenes look amazing with the 3D Models. Maps have dialogue that occur in between battles adding to the immersion. Plus the gameplay has a lot more depth compared to three houses.
