Q: Is this yoga mat it slippery?

submitted by LoriR13 - 4 years ago
  • A: Day One it was a tiny bit slippery. I did not wash it as the manufacturer suggested. However, I've had no slippage ever since.

submitted byDejavoo - 4 years ago
  • A: This yoga mat is designed with a non-slip grip! New yoga mats may be a little slippery at first and do come with a bit of a break-in period though, but this can be fixed simply by washing the mat. Wash your yoga mat before use with a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water, a mild soap, or a yoga mat wash to help increase the grip right away!

  • A: I tried out two Gaiam mats, this one and the reversible one. This one was definitely not slippery as opposed to the other one. It actually feels tacky (like almost dried paint).

Q: Does this yoga mat have a bad smell?

submitted by Unhappy customer - 3 years ago
  • A: I kept my new mat out unfurled for two days. Only slight rubber smell left, and you have to put your nose right up to it to detect.

submitted bySDgrandma - 2 years ago
  • A: New mats may have a bit of a smell when first taken out of packaging, but the smell is non-toxic and will fade with time. We recommend cleaning the mat before use to remove the smell right away. Try washing the mat with a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water, a yoga mat wash, or a mild soap. Wash well and let air dry.

submitted by Jojo36 - 1 year ago
  • A: Yes. The Gaiam Premium Yoga Mat is 6mm thick, compared to the Classic which is 4mm thick.

  • A: The weight of the Gaiam Metallic Bronze Printed Yoga Mat is 3.5lbs

Q: Does this yoga mat come with a strap or some way to keep it rolled up when you're not using it?

submitted by caramelldansen - 3 years ago
  • A: This mat does not come with a strap. Straps can be purchased separately.

Definitely not non-stick. Attempted to use it for one practice and found myself fighting the splits and falling out of poses as my hands and feet were slipping constantly. Not the kind of workout I was looking for. Usually my go to brand. Mat is sadly being returned.

We are sorry to hear this and recommend wiping the mat down prior to use with 50/50 solution of water and vinegar. This will remove any ink residue and increase the grip. Please allow 24 hours to air dry.

Bronze Paint on Feet

Shannan - 1 year ago
There is a reason this is on sale. The paint used to make the bronze medallion rubs off on everything. Do not buy this unless you want a smudged mat and bronze paint on your feet.

Better grip than reversible Gaiam mat

Love this mat after trying it out in yoga class. The mat does, as advertised, feel sticky or tacky to the touch such that you wonder if a residue is left on your hands and feet (there is not). The stickiness helps to maintain your yoga postures such as downward dog, warrior and the plank. Additionally, the 6mm thickness (as opposed to the 4mm) provides cushioning for knees and spine. I wasn't sure about the bright gold design but actually enjoyed it while doing the postures....gives you something pretty to look at!

Thickness is not everything

My Jade Harmony mat started shedding so I needed a new one. Bought this because this is cheap and pretty, and that is exactly what you get. My knees are always in pain when I am in poses that put weight on my knees. I looked into some stats - both mats are 68 inches in length and 24 inches wide, the Jade Harmony is 4.7mm at 5lbs, while this Gaiam mat is 6mm at 3.75lbs. Seems to me the Gaiam mat just does not have the right density (enough material) to actually protect you. Think cotton candy (Gaiam) vs marshmallow (Jade). Additionally, this mat has no grip. Starting with my first down dog (so no sweat yet), I can feel my hands and feet slipping as I hold the position. Sure, there are ways around my complaints - double fold the mat for more cushion on my knees and use a towel for my practice. But do you really want to stop your flow to fold the mat? Or buy another towel? My previous mat did not need either one. Also not sure what the ""lifetime guarantee"" entails. I am three months into the mat (I did not associate the knee pain to the mat in the beginning, thought I was out of shape), when I reached out to regarding how unhappy with the quality mat, they said take it to your retailer, which, the retailer has nothing to do with the quality of the product itself. So I am unsure what they are guarantying. I find that this ""premium"" mat would only be suitable for someone brand new to yoga and not sure if you will stick with it (but there are cheaper options that probably perform similarly if you are in that situation). I have never had any previous knee injury, so I would recommend you look for something else if you know you have sensitive knee. If you are already committed and practice multiple times a week, find something better. *review sourced from Gaiam

Print comes off easily

The print is more bronze than gold and it runs off with sweat. It’s a thicker mat, which I like but I’m bummed about the print transferring off.

I’ve had this yoga mat for 8 months now and absolutely love it!! Great design with perfect length and width. I’m 5’3 and the length works well for me. It still has great cushion and grip to it after 8 months. I go to yoga 1-2x weekly. Would highly recommend. Also if you do hot yoga, would definitely recommend buying a yoga mat towel.

This is rather slippery. I do not have particularly sweaty hands but notice a loss of grip when my hands are even slightly moist. Other than that it looks nice.
1 reply from Gaiam Team team - 2 years ago
Grip is a very personal preference, and can vary based on how much you sweat during practice. We do offer textures such as dry grip and insta-grip for a non-slip surface even during hot yoga.

beautiful, thick enough yoga pad for me. the odor is pretty strong and stubborn thought...i let it air out for 5 days and the odor is not completely gone yet...
1 reply from Gaiam Team team - 2 years ago
We are glad to know that you like the yoga mat. It is common for our mats to have a harmless odor when first unrolled. Leaving it open to air out is a great way for the smell to dissipate. You can also apply a solution of 50/50 water and witch hazel to help it dissipate faster.

It gets the job done and it looks cute, but if I sweat even a little, my hands and feet lose grip on the mat. So that’s annoying.
