Well written with scattered personal anecdotes

Well written basic advice book with some personal memoir anecdotes thrown in. Personally, I would have gotten more out of it with more extended and connected personal stories. They seemed sporadically scattered through.

Reading I Thought It Would Be Better Than This felt like sitting down for a heart-to-heart with a trusted friend. Jessica Turner writes with such honesty, warmth, and integrity—you can truly feel that she’s poured her heart and soul into these pages. What I loved most is that she doesn’t pretend to have all the answers. Instead, she generously shares what’s worked for her, offers incredibly helpful resources, and reminds us that there’s no one-size-fits-all fix. It’s refreshing and empowering. This book is a beautiful companion for anyone navigating disappointment or feeling stuck. It’s a guide for reclaiming joy, finding your footing again, and building a life you love—with grace and self-compassion. Highly recommend for anyone who needs encouragement and real talk, all wrapped up in love.

I didn’t expect to connect so deeply with this book, but I did, in the most personal way. Jessica Turner puts words to what it’s like when life doesn’t go as planned, when the big picture you built starts to fall apart, and you’re left figuring out what that means for who you are. Her honesty and vulnerability made me feel seen in the hard, quiet parts of my own story. What I appreciated most is that she doesn’t rush past the pain. She sits in it, reflects on it, and slowly shows what it looks like to rebuild with one choice, one day, one breath at a time. If you’re walking through a season of disappointment or trying to make sense of life after things have changed, this book is a powerful companion.

What a unique book. Jessica weaves her own story with research, advice from experts, data from studies, and exercises you can do in your town time to process grief over thinking "I thought it would be better than this." I don't think there is anyone around who hasn't uttered that phrase, or knows someone close to them who has. She cites her sources and brings receipts, all of which can point you to further resources for exploring, grief, trauma, and recovery. I know I will spend time reading the work of the authors she mentions,, and I feel like I have more tools in my toolbox now after reading this book. I applaud Jessica's vulnerability, candor, and tenderness as she shares the most vulnerable parts of her life in hopes that she can help others survive and thrive after thinking "I thought it would be better than this."

Full of words of encouragement, helpful tidbits along the way to help you see your full potential in your own life. I have been a follower of Jessica's Instagram for several years now and seeing how she weaves her life that she has shown in her IG and then turn it into something meaningful to help her and then the reader become more is beautiful. I bought the audiobook because I wanted to support Jessica and I didn't think I would get anything truly out of this book because I think that my life is pretty good and that I feel i am at a good place. However, I found myself highlighting many little pieces of wisdom/advice that I can put to use in my own life, eye opening. Give this book a try and see if you can't find even one thing that could truly make your life better! Thank you Jessica for putting out a treasure!

Jessica’s honesty and vulnerability are a gift. While our stories are not the same, we all have an area of our lives where we, like Jessica, would say, “ I thought it would be better than this.” This book is like having a friend to walk through that with us, guide us as we look honestly at our expectations, reality, and the differences between them, and then help us to take healthy steps forward into a new and beautiful phase. Life is never easy, but it’s easier when we go together and hold each other up, which is what this book does.

Over the past few months, while dealing with this struggle in my life, I have kept feeling like, "I just don't know how to get through this." This book is exactly what I've been looking for. Jessica has outlined with compassionate insights the steps to take to move forward and I am so so grateful!

This book is really powerful on two levels. My first read-through was focused on Jessica’s story and the grief she experienced when life didn’t turn out as she expected. It’s a compelling memoir and story. But then, I re-read it slowly and took time with each chapter to process the disappointments and grief in my own life. Each chapter focuses on helpful tools to aid in discovering what’s really going on under the surface and then really practical tips to move through the pain to growth and healing. I highly recommend this for an interesting narrative and also a helpful resource for those who are disappointed with where they find themselves (hint: everyone!)

“I Thought it Would be Better Than This” is a book that everyone can relate to. While their story might be different than Jessica’s, they will find a connection with hers in this book. Jessica shares her experience and does a great job relating it to other situations that you might be going through. If you’ve ever said “I thought it would be better than this”, this book is for you.

I think it's a pretty univers I think it's a pretty universal experience to think some part of your life would be better than it is, and Jessica Turner has turned her experience with that into a beautiful multi-faceted memoir that includes not only her story, but also thoughts and tools she used to recover from her divorce. I'm a grief specialist professionally, and I found this to be so valuable. You will feel seen and inspired in Jessica's story.

Jessica uses her own heartbreak and life experiences to share how she not only walked through pain but found herself in the process. It is a book filled with hope and encouragement. While I haven't been through a divorse, I have been through many seasons wondering why things had to be so hard. Jessica has clearly done some of the hard work necessary to process these types of situations but then also gives advice on what worked for her. If you find yourself in a place where you wonder why things have ended up the way they have and you want some practical tips on moving forward, this book is for you. Her chapter on forgiveness and grief were specifically impactful. I read through it so fast (I had access to an advanced reader copy) that I need to go back and process it slowly! I have also started to listen to the audio book that I purchased that is read in her own voice! If you are familiar with Jessica, her personality shines through the audio version and brings another level of connection and transparency when you hear it. I so appreciate her honesty and genuineness that is evident throughout this book!

I was privileged enough to get an advanced copy of this book through the launch team, and it was hard to put down. I’ve followed Jessica for years, and was so astonished when her world was flipped upside down. Reading her story was unbelievable, but being able to see things in my own life that maybe weren’t going my way in a new light has shifted my perspective. Jessica’s story can resonate with anyone in any situation where it’s just not going your way. This book isn’t just about divorce; it speaks to identity loss, grief, trauma and unmet expectations in a way that is uplifting and powerful enough to change perspective. I am feeling more brave to tackle the things I want to change, and it has been truly life changing. This book will certainly bless others, and will be a re-read for me. Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book!

We all have something in our lives that hasn’t turned out the way we had hoped or imagined. For author Jessica Turner, it was her marriage of 16 years ending unexpectedly and having to navigate life post-divorce. Jessica shares her story and what she has learned along the way beautifully. She weaves in practical advice and action steps that are applicable to nearly any life situation that you hoped would be “better than this”. Jessica’s writing takes you through steps that feel like something between therapy and a conversation with a friend. For many of us, myself included, it is easy to latch on to resentment and to live with one foot in the traumas and stories that formed deep wounds in our hearts. Jessica teaches us how to redeem our stories in order to live more hopefully in this one beautiful life we’ve been given.
