Description

About the Book

Keene, a former high-school-football-star-turned-drug dealer, tells the incredible true story of how, facing a 10-year prison sentence, he was offered an impossible mission: coax a confession out of a fellow inmate, a serial killer, and be free to walk.

Book Synopsis

The basis for the Apple TV+ show Black Bird.

In with the Devil presents the true story of a young man destined for greatness on the football field--until a few wrong turns led him to a ten-year prison sentence. He was offered an impossible mission: Coax a confession out of a fellow inmate, a serial killer, and walk free.

Jimmy Keene grew up outside of Chicago. Although he was the son of a policeman and rubbed shoulders with the city's elite, he ended up on the wrong side of the law and was sentenced to ten years with no chance of parole.

Just a few months into his sentence, Keene was approached by the prosecutor who put him behind bars. He had convicted a man named Larry Hall for abducting and killing a fifteen-year-old. Although Hall was suspected of killing nineteen other young women, there was a chance he could still be released on appeal. If Keene could get him to confess to two murders, there would be no doubt about Hall's guilt. In return, Keene would get an unconditional release from prison. But he could also get killed.

A story that gained national notoriety, this is Keene's powerful tale of peril, violence, and redemption.

Brilliant Thriller

James Keene author and writer of the book In with the Devil gives us an in-depth view of his heroic experiences. Keene gives a clear and honest account of his life's beginnings, as well as the extraordinary tale of his ascent and descent. The dangerously wild ride that would take him on a very bizarre once in a lifetime perilous adventure. It turns out that the task Keene was given was the first and only time in American history that a dangerous mission as risky as this would be attempted to unravel twisted secrets. As Keene progresses toward complete redemption, Keene leads us step by step through a labyrinth of the unknown, and you can sense the exact depth of the danger he was experiencing. Keene has to walk a dangerous tightrope to try to enter inside of the mind of a dangerous deranged serial killer while navigating through a bevy of dangerous obstacles in his path. Keene discovers all of the unsettling horror that the psychotic killer harbors as he enters into his twisted thoughts and mind. It's a crazy adventure to solve that mystery and obtain the confessions necessary to prove the killer's guilt! All in all, the book is fantastic and highly recommended! If you've watched the Black Bird television series, the book clarifies a lot of what was unclear or muddled, leaving issues unanswered. Compared to the Black Bird TV series, which is heightened for drama in some parts and toned down in others, lessening the actual violence and brutally gruesome killings of serial murderer Hall, I found the book to be more realistic, precise, and vivid. The only thing about the book that I would say I did not enjoy, overall, was how much background information about the prison's past it included. Levin, Keene's aide, was superfluous and made an excessive effort to incorporate the historical context of the prisons. It was excessive and detracted from the true account of Keene's valiant covert effort to prevent the insane serial killer from ever being able to roam free to kill any more young girls. Keene achieves what is considered to be an impossible mission and comes out with an outcome that securely and firmly stops the serial killer from killing again. And is ingratiated by the U.S. Government with his freedom and a clean and clear record. This book is a must-read if you enjoy true crime as much as I do.
