A gripping mix of friendship, violence and redemption erupts in the contemporary South in this adaptation of Larry Brown's novel, celebrated at once for its grit and its deeply moving core. Directed by David Gordon Green, the film brings Academy Award(R) winner Nicolas Cage back to his indie roots in the title role as the hard-living, hot-tempered, ex-con Joe Ransom, who is just trying to dodge his instincts for trouble - until he meets a hard-luck kid played by Tye Sheridan who awakens in him a fierce and tender-hearted protector.

Great story and acting, but sex scene is completely unnecessary

This is a story about both a teenage boy from a bad home environment and a ex-con who became sort of a mentor to him. They both work hard to try to make life better. The story has a sad ending, but at the same time provide hope. Acting was amazingly good. The bonus feature on the disc has an interesting segment showing how the main actors were picked, and that was the only reason why I bought the disc version rather than the stream version. I don't understand why a sex scene was thrown in though. It was almost like they threw it in just because it was expected in many movies that involved mature subject matters. Fortunately the scene did not involve any minors.
