About this item

Description

Explore the future of advanced computing technology with KAI — short for Kosmos Artificial Intelligence! Build and program an intelligent, six-legged, app-enabled robot that uses machine learning to react to the gestures and sounds that you make. Machine learning is the process by which computers use data to recognize patterns, learn, and make predictions, and it is a key aspect of artificial intelligence. Using the app and your smart device’s camera and microphone, record physical gestures and sounds, assigning them to KAI’s five functions: walk forward and backward, turn left and right, and stop. The AI will learn to recognize each gesture or sound, even if they differ in small details. The more data you collect, the better the AI will learn from it. Use the data collected to create an AI model in the training screen of the app, where the AI takes your data and recognizes patterns in it. The learning curve shows you how accurately the AI model is learning, and you can use the sliders to adjust the number of times it will analyze the data and how quickly the training should run to get better results. Then put your AI model to the test in play mode by controlling your robot remotely. Just perform the same gestures or sounds that you did when collecting data, and your robot will perform the assigned function! You can also control KAI directly using the remote-control function in the app or by using your smart device as a gyroscope, tilting it in the direction you want it to move in. Mechanically, KAI is a fascinating robot that can walk on six legs and rotate its upper body around 360 degrees, allowing it to turn toward any direction on the spot. Composed of 25 red LEDs, its face display can be programmed via the app to show different expressions and scrolling messages. A full-color, 64-page manual provides step-by-step illustrated assembly and programming instructions, teaches lessons in AI and robotics, and includes a fun, comic-book-style story that brings KAI to life. Read about the history and future of AI and its real-world applications. The app requires a tablet (recommended) or smartphone running iOS or Android. Please check the app stores for compatibility and device requirements. Build your own six-legged robot from more than 100 pieces Collect data via your smart device's camera and microphone Train your AI model to more accurately recognize patterns in the data Control your robot remotely using gestures and sounds Remote-control mode allows you to manually control your robot Display emotions and messages on the robot’s LED face display Includes a lesson in creating your own AI using household items (paper and cups)

It works!

This little robot is so cute, but you need to make sure to set some time to put together. The instructions were easy to follow but it was a little time consuming and the app was difficult to work with in the beginning.

Fun and great for learning.

This has been a fun toy to use. Both my kids enjoy it and play with it daily. Instructions are good and straight forward. Make sure to read them first. My daughter loves to use it multiple times a day. Great for the whole family.

Cute little robot

This is decent. My 12 years old enjoyed putting this together. It kept him busy for a little while, but he lost interest after a little bit. I would recommend this for maybe 10-11 year old that can do the same project for a bit longer than mine could.

Ok robot.

Tedious job putting this little robot together. You have to unsnap almost all pieces from the plastic holder and then trim off extra tabs. Directions were easy to follow, but some tasks were slightly difficult. Was hoping for an extra printout of the pieces and numbers, I think that would have been helpful. After I got it put together it worked for only one day and it stopped. Didn’t have the time or patience to take apart and try to figure it out. Would be a cool gift for an older teen who wants to get into building. But not sure it would be worth the cost.

Clear instructions, a task to build, fun to play

These robot is very cool! It's so neat that you get to put it together yourself. The kids had so much fun once it was all assembled to control the different faces it can make on the front and make it walk and rotate. It moves kind of like a spider, which is also fun! The only downside is that it comes completely unassembled and you have to even cut each individual piece out of the plastic holders. The instructions indicate to use a wire cutter, but I would recommend a very sharp exacto knife (and either an adult to handle it or adult supervision!). Cutting out each piece was tedious. Otherwise, very clear instructions and fun to build and control!

Takes a while to put together, but fun

This was cool enough to hold the attention of my own kids, who are 3,7, and 9, as well as some of the middle school students I teach. It takes some learning, and my oh my are the screws small, but it's cool once you get it together and find your lost pieces!

Really fun toy

This Artificial Intelligence Robot is a really fun toy! My son had a lot of fun putting it together with some help. It comes with a lot of parts you have to punch out but it is a really fun project. I like that you can connect it to your phone.

Good quality play

This is a great toy for a child who is into how things work. It’s not hard to learn and my children have a great time playing and can spend a good amount of time playing with it. I would recommend for a child just a bit older who loves to see things come to life and using their brain power to make things work

Great gift idea for the tech lovers in your life!

I got this item for my 13 year old son to put together and use. He’s very excited about it and once we have it assembled, I’ll come back and post a more in depth review. The item arrived on time and in a box that has clear instructions for how to assemble and then use the product.

A lot of pieces!

Originally my son was super excited to build and play with this robot. That is, until he opened the box and saw the pieces! It’s a lot. And they’re all on that plastic grid where you have to break off each piece and the instructions tell you to sand down each piece to make sure there’s no nubs left. He got overwhelmed with it all and never ended up finishing it. Maybe he will come back to it on a rainy day!

Build your own robot.

This is a pretty cool project to get kids off the internet and devices. My son whose 13 was able to put it together without much help. He only got tired of working on it and his dad finished it. He could have easily finished if he hadn't got board towards the end. He really enjoyed putting all the motors and gears together. He did all that on his own. It did take a lot of time but it kept him engaged at first. If your kids really into building this is perfect project. It is a lot of pieces. Once the robot was put together it worked well the app is really easy to use. I think it would be cooler if the hands worked. It can move around make shapes and faces on the little screen. If the hands would move or put stuff up the kids would be engaged for longer. There's not that much it can do after you've made it walk around.

Difficult and confusing

Very difficult AI robot to assemble, the fact that you have to pop out different pieces and put together it using electrical wires it was not easy with the instructions either. After an hour of trying to assemble to robot, we gave up.

Great gift for kids who love technology. 10+

This robot was so fun to put together. I have 11yo twins(boy & girl). They both loved putting it together. I made them take turns and the instructions, although lengthy, were very easy to understand. The box states ages 10+with help & 12+ “I got this”. Tools that are not included but definitely needed are a small Phillips-head screwdriver ( like small enough for remote control cars or small toys), diagonal cutter or scissors ( we used wire cutters) and a nail file ( we also used a metal file- it is used to file off the plastic tabs that hold the pieces together to the frames) 4 AAA batteries are also Required and the app to run the robot can be found using smartphone or tablet ( iOS or Android). My son found the detailed video instructions on YouTube. They were helpful as well. I gave this only 4 stars because my kids did not play with it very much after we put it together.

Absolutely fun, and a great learning experience!

So interestingly fun! I was skeptical about this robot, but felt like I have to get this for my kids! I was super excited to see it when it arrived! Upon opening it, it does feel overwhelming, but after putting it all together and learning how to use it together. As a family we have fallen in love! Control the robot facial expressions, collect data from body poses, and also collect data to assign to the robots functions! After using it for a few weeks we have loved being able to program it, and learn about AI in general! Great learning product!

Robot KAI the smart guy!

WOW! Now this a smart toy! I am so impressed with the difficulty level of KAI. This is not a baby toy, and you and your children may feel challenged at times, however it is never frustrating or tedious. The instruction booklet was detailed and easy to follow. This took roughly 2 hours to assemble, which we spread out over several days. To assemble KAI, you should be sure to have a toolbox equipped with long/needle-nose screwdrivers as well as clippers. I love that the app is both free and very interactive and there is even a phone stand included for ease of use while training KAI.Overall, Thames & Kosmos thought of everything and KAI is a wonderful value for all that it teaches and is capable of learning. Something else that we love is KAI’s ability to hold items! My cats also adore KAI and his ability to hold their toys and play!

Build a bot

I was pleasantly surprised by how well my 11 year old daughter put this together 90% on her own. She was able to look at the instructions and show me how it made sense to her and to help it make sense to me. It didn’t take her forever either. I think only two days total. It may have only taken one day if I hadn’t had slowed her down by telling her I would have to take a look at such and such the next day otherwise, she wanted to stay up all night until it was done! Now after it was put together though, she quickly got bored and hasn’t played with it much. It made her and me feel really good about herself.

Fun!

Really fun to put together and the instructions were great. It takes you through step by step and my 13 year old really enjoyed it. Once you have it together it’s a little bit harder to set up the movements, but after about an hour my daughter and her friend figured it out.

Cool project but some issues

I really wanted to like this. I got it for my 15 yr old STEM oriented daughter. She spent several hours putting it together. It was a little challenging because the directions are not the greatest. Also the plastic can snap with too much pressure. She got it together on her own - with a little parental assist. Trying to get the AI part to work was a different story. It would sync with the app but the gears don't seem to align so it won't move forward the way it is supposed to. I took it partially apart to see if I could fix it, but I could not diagnose the issue. My feedback is - this is a good model for people who like models. It is not the greatest robot because of the gear issues. It would have had 5 stars if it worked, but alas, it disappointed. Now it collects dust.

Fun little robot, but not fun putting it together.

This is a cute little toy robot, but the assembly was not fun. It comes with 3 plastic molded sets of parts (see photo). Be careful not to be overly ambitious and try to separate all of the pieces from the start, because then it will be super difficult to put together. The instructions warn you only to pull off pieces as you need them to assemble the robot. And for a few pieces, you will need a razor blade or pair of pliers to make sure you completely remove the little plastic nubs. The instructions are completely visual, with no written directions (see photo). I found them not completely easy to use and made a few small mistakes during assembly. Eventually, I was able to get everything together. It probably took me 45 minutes to an hour. My fingers were too big to handle the screws so I needed a pair of tweezers. I personally did not enjoy the process of putting it together, but I can see someone who enjoys toy models would have fun with it. Fully assembled the robot is approximately 6.5 inches tall and at the base it is approximately 6 inches from leg to leg. I personally don’t like the idea of having to download yet another app to my phone, my daughter didn’t have any issues. She was able to download the app and quickly start using it to control the robot. She found it intuitive and fun to use, although she hasn’t used it since the first time she tried it. She was also a little disappointed that the arms did not move, only the legs. Overall, this is just an OK toy. Most of the challenge is in the assembly, it’s not as fun to play with afterwards.

Neat for the Science Loving Kid

This is so neat for my science loving girl!!! It does seem a little challenging at first to get it all put together but with some help from her Dad she can do it. So neat to see this project unfold and for the Robot to actually work.
