About this item

Highlights

  • Build your own awesome, wearable mechanical hand that you operate with your own fingers.
  • No motors, no batteries — just the power of air pressure, water, and your own hands!
  • Hydraulic pistons enable the mechanical fingers to open and close and grip objects with enough force to lift them. Every finger joint can be adjusted to different angles for precision movement.
  • Three configurations: right hand, left hand, and claw-like; adjustable to fit virtually any human hand.
  • Learn how pneumatic and hydraulic systems are used in industrial robots such as automobile components.

Description

Explore hydraulics, pneumatics, and robotics with your very own GIANT hydraulic hand! Using over 200 plastic pieces and piston tubes that you fill with water, build an awesome mechanical hand that uses hydraulic power to simulate the movements of the human hand--no motors or electricity required! Once assembled, your cyborg hand slips onto your own hand like a glove, with mechanical fingers that you operate with your own fingers and that can grip objects with enough force to lift them. Challenge yourself to pick up and hold a variety of items like bottles, pencils, small items--anything within reach! The hand can be configured in three ways--left hand, right hand, and claw-like, with the thumb in the center--and can be adjusted to fit virtually all hand sizes. A 40-page, full-color manual guides model building and experimentation and provides engaging scientific information about how pneumatic and hydraulic systems are used in industrial robots to assist with a variety of tasks in our modern world.

Q: Does this take batteries? if so what kind and how many?

submitted by DTaylor - 9 months ago
  • A: Thanks for asking! Batteries are not required for the Mega Cyborg Hand STEM Kit. The robotic hand utilizes a hydraulic (water-powered) and pneumatic (air-powered) system to move the fingers and pick up objects.

It is small plastic pieces and too hard for a 10 year old even though it says 10+ on the box. It needs to be built by an adult and you need tools for it.

3 stars for the idea and instructions manual. It is a long process to assemble and needs adult supervision. There are a lot of small pieces and details. I do not recommend for kids under 9. The major con is it doesn’t work as smoothly as advertised.

Very lengthy assembly

3 out of 5 stars
Lacey - 4 months ago, Verified purchaser
This project takes multiple hours to assemble or multiple days if you have a kid that can't stay focused on something that long, like I do. I also feel like this is better for kids who are older than what is recommended. The worst part for me is breaking every little 3D printed piece free before you can even start. I don't recommend this toy unless you have a kid that is really into building and learning about hydraulics.

Recommend for a much older child than the manufacturer recommends.

The recommended age bracket is incorrect. This is probably a 12-14 year old STEM project at minimum.

My 10 year old son had a blast putting this together. He is very good at building so he was able to build it completely on his own. It took him about 3.5 hours. It works great and he hasn’t put it down since he built it! Great STEM kit. Small wire cutters are much easier to use than scissors to get all the plastics pieces out.

7yo grandson put this at the top of his Christmas list! I was skeptical. He and his dad put it together in 4 hours. But they thoroughly enjoyed building it together! Grandson went to bed still playing with it that night and it was the first thing he picked up the next morning! Surprisingly sturdy! Great toy. Very reasonably priced.

The quality of the pieces are shoddy and we had to glue a couple together that broke. My son likes it but the toy isn’t really functional without an imagination.

My son loved this! He is 11 years old and loves to build. He often gets tired of toys because he is a little older, but not this time. I definitely recommend.

My 9-year-old got this for his birthday. It did take a while to put together and he needed an adult to take the pieces out of the packaging, but it was wonderful entertainment and education for him. He was able to understand most of the instructions himself with only a few things we needed to figure out together. When he finally got to put it together he was super excited being able to pick things up around the house.

Have to be Young Sheldon in order to figure this out and put it together. Pieces are cheap plastic that a 3D printer could print out better quality Took over 4 hours to assemble as the instructions are not that clear and needed to use an online video. Once assembled only one finger works and its the one you use to salute and not very kid appropriate.

Our nephew turned 10 years old. He loves building Legos and he loves science. I randomly came across the Mega Cyborg Hand and noticed it was a STEM experiment. I thought it was perfect for our nephew! Based on the reviews, I took a chance. Let me tell you! We're not disappointed! Our nephew was so excited and had blast learning. He and his father spent 4 hours building it but he was able to do majority of the building himself with very little help from his father. It was a fun project for both of them. Great for both learning and bonding time! I recommend!
