Fun fact, the plates on the back of a stegosaurus are not attached to their spines. The big, bony-looking plates were imbedded in the dinosaur's thick skin and were covered with a network of small veins. Some scientists think they were used as "solar panels." A very cool way to keep warm!

I was so excited about this. It has so many building options and is a great price. But the "solar" panel doesn't work with the sun, a light, a flashlight shone directly onto it, nothing works. If it just had batteries it'd be 5 star

Face different, not as cute

We haven’t opened or used it yet but I wanted to forewarn other buyers that the robot doesn’t look like the cute Short Cirtcuit Wall-E robot online. See photos. Maybe it depends on where you get it. Maybe one is the older model, one newer? The one we got is copyrighted 2021, so hopefully the cuter version is the newer one.

I bought this for my son who really likes Wall-E. The pictures make this look very much like Wall-E with the eyes and everything. But the actual robot doesn't have those blue eyes and is just a flat gray piece. No thanks.

Twin mama pdx - 6 months ago
My son got this as a present and it was definitely challenging to put together. I ended up putting the robot together however my twins loved it so much and It worked when we took it outside and it walked on the sidewalk. It’s one of the favorite things that they’ve even ever had. We assembled it the week before they turned seven. I don’t think most children would be able to put it together though. Without a lot of adult support clicking all the pieces out of the plastic takes a lot of time and effort

My husband helped my 8 year old to assemble the first robot and it worked but getting all the little pieces to fit together is extremely difficult for an adult, let alone a child. My son took the robot apart and started building a second one, which the motor was all assembled but now he's asking me for my help to get the plastic pieces together and it's really hard. It hurts my hands and if you use tools you can break the pieces. It is a great concept but poorly designed.

This set was good for my son's fine motor skill development. He is 10yro and needed a bit of help. He assembled the Zombie Bot and we tested the motor like the instructions suggested but it barely moved. After assembling the robot and having it in direct sunlight for 30min to charge, it didn't move at all. Good for skill development but terrible execution. My son was extremely disappointed the robot didn't actually move.

After two hours of frustration, some tears, and a lot of anger, we have thrown this entire kit into the garbage. My engineer-minded 8-year-old who can assemble kits above his age level and I decide enough was enough. This was a gift and we have no receipt. So I took out a $20 bill and handed it to my son so he could buy something else. I’ve had it with this poorly manufactured Discovery kits. They are cheap, low quality, pieces of garbage. Mind you, I have an advanced degree in computer systems. Parts don’t fit well, instructions are vague, and the whole process is only a challenge in patience - which was a good lesson we learned. But we also learned when to call it a day.

You need to remove all of the little pieces and make sure the plastic edges are smooth. They provide stickers and bags to keep extra pieces in once they are removed. My 6yo son and I took a while getting it assembled, but the instructions were clear. I think the pricing is right and that an older child could assemble it independently.

Be prepared for a lot of work. This is a very complicated set! The set has a ton of very small pieces that require a lot of preparation before you can start building. You need to have a side cutter tool to properly remove the parts and then use a file to remove any excess plastic. Once assembled the robot is pretty cool, but this may not be the best fit if you don’t have the patience for the setup.

Instructions were disorganized and confusing. My son is 5 I sat with him the entire time to help. I’m about to return it to the store. Don’t waste your money unless you’re an engineer major and buying it as a graduation present for yourself.

Not Worth The Money At All

Unless you hold the solar panel up against a light bulb it won't work. Extremely bright flashlights won't work either. It's completely useless in my opinion but unfortunately wasn't aware of how awful it was until we'd taken all 5000 pieces out of the plastic molds. Now I've got a frustrated 9yo who can't use his Christmas present.

We built this with our 5 yo, and loved the experience. The little robot is so cute and runs as expected with solar power. It takes patience and you need to follow the directions exactly, but everything is well documented and organized. Well worth the money!
