The method comes from Raymond Williams's Keywords (1976), which showed how ordinary words carry ideologies that shape what a society can see. Applied to child disability, it is unusually revealing. Special was introduced to replace categories of deficit; within a generation it had become a mechanism for segregation. Care means tenderness and it means warehousing - and the history of disabled children is the history of that ambiguity being exploited.

The cumulative argument is this: the language used about disabled children is not a reflection of how we think about them. It is a mechanism by which we avoid thinking about them. Every euphemism, every clinical classification, every sentimental phrase exists in part to manage the discomfort that disability provokes in a society organised around productivity, independence, and normality.

The words are not innocent. They never were.
