About the Book
"Grann revisits a ... series of crimes in which dozens of people were murdered in cold blood. Based on years of research and ... new evidence, the book [outlines the steps that reveal] a series of sinister secrets and reversals. But more than that, it is [an] ... indictment of the callousness and prejudice toward American Indians that allowed the murderers to operate with impunity for so long"--Amazon.com.Book Synopsis
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALISTFrom the #1 New York Times best-selling author of The Lost City of Z, a twisting, haunting true-life murder mystery about one of the most monstrous crimes in American history
In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, the Osage rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe.
Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. One of her relatives was shot. Another was poisoned. And it was just the beginning, as more and more Osage were dying under mysterious circumstances, and many of those who dared to investigate the killings were themselves murdered.
As the death toll rose, the newly created FBI took up the case, and the young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to try to unravel the mystery. White put together an undercover team, including a Native American agent who infiltrated the region, and together with the Osage began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history. A New York Times Notable Book Named a best book of the year by Amazon, Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe, San Francisco Chronicle, GQ, Time, Newsday, Entertainment Weekly, Time Magazine, NPR, Vogue, Smithsonian, Cosmopolitan, Seattle Times, Bloomberg, Lit Hub, and Slate
Review Quotes
"The best book of the year so far."--Entertainment Weekly "Disturbing and riveting. . . . Grann has proved himself a master of spinning delicious, many-layered mysteries that also happen to be true. . . . It will sear your soul."
--Dave Eggers, New York Times Book Review
"A marvel of detective-like research and narrative verve."
--Financial Times "A shocking whodunit. . . . What more could fans of true-crime thrillers ask?"
--USA Today "A master of the detective form. . . . Killers is something rather deep and not easily forgotten."
--Wall St. Journal "David Grann's Killers of the Flower Moon is unsurprisingly extraordinary.
--Time "A masterful work of literary journalism crafted with the urgency of a mystery. . . . Contained within Grann's mesmerizing storytelling lies something more than a brisk, satisfying read. Killers of the Flower Moon offers up the Osage killings as emblematic of America's relationship with its indigenous peoples and the 'culture of killing' that has forever marred that tie."
--The Boston Globe "[C]lose to impeccable. It's confident, fluid in its dynamics, light on its feet. . . . The crime story it tells is appalling, and stocked with authentic heroes and villains. It will make you cringe at man's inhumanity to man."
--The New York Times New York Times bestseller (April 2018)

Grann is an amazing writer that weaves history into a narrative tale that would seem like fiction if you didn’t know better. This is a fantastic compilation of history on a very important issue!

It’s a well crafted story that goes into great detail of the Osage killings. I never knew about this dark chapter in American history until now.
A cross between a true crime podcast & a whodunnit

It’s books like this that remind me how little they teach in public school about US History, especially when it comes to the Indigenous People. I sadly had no idea about the Reign of Terror that occurred in the Osage Hills. This non-fiction book is eye opening and left me feeling sick to my stomach, reminding me of just how greedy & self-serving humanity can be. The Osage Nation deserved better. This is book reminded me of a true crime podcast crossed with a whodunnit murder mystery; it’s written in a way that tells a story that’s chalked full of facts but with very little fluff. I devoured this book in under two days, just wanting to know if they were able to solve the murders. If you haven’t heard about the Osage Murders and the Reign of Terror, I highly recommend checking this one out!

I liked the historical photos & the book bringing this tragedy to people like me who had no knowledge of this treatment of Native Americans. I knew what history books in school acknowledged.

I don't typically read history books but I'm glad I read this one. It's fascinating yet shocking and sad. I really enjoyed the author's writing style and how well-researched it was.

I read this book in a few nights I was so intrigued by the story and that it was fact based and not dramatized. Well researched and written, it brought the numerous characters to life. Hard to accept that the US Government and the people of Oklahoma treated these First Americans so callously. Highly recommend.
