Mexico, 1924. From the cold lands of Eastern Europe, where being Jewish has become a stigma and a synonym for persecution, two young couples cross the great ocean to escape antisemitism and the wars that are wiping out their people. Coming from the Ukrainian village of Zhytomyr and from Krakow, the couples Yehuda-Natasha and Leah-Yakov arrive at the port of Veracruz, carrying with them a long trail of pain, abuse, and loss.

In Mexico, they find a surprising richness, as well as a welcoming community--but the weight of their past is a heavy burden to bear, and a tangle of secrets and betrayals, hidden like any family's, will follow them into the New World.
